I love Tolkien. Re-reading THE HOBBIT right now.
Recently read Asimov’s SPACE RANGER books. They’re old and campy, but I really enjoyed them! And they have lightsab..."
Hi J

Imad from Morocco here! Currently based in Beijing, China. My day job is a normal 9-5, but flexible enough to allow me the casual sneaky things us writers do whenever inspiration strikes us-- or for want for a better word, when we strike it back!
I never imagined the writing life to be this array of dedication; almost like a ladder that compels you to keep going. In fact, there is no other option but to have self resilience and keep going, lest standing too long in one spot might result in falling back to old habits, past selves that no longer serve our present, and worse, fall in between the gaps.
I am looking forward to learn and grow in this community.
Thank you for having me,

Hopefully get some good advice from you experts

Welcome from the Great White North. How far back do you want to go in Space Opera.
Welcome David! I encourage you to browse the group bookshelf for books that look interesting. There’s at least one discussion thread about any of the books marked as Read. You can read the comments if you aren’t sure you want to read that book. Do feel free to add comments to a discussion thread even if it’s for a book we read five years ago.

me: reading SF since late 1990ies
epic scale adventure through the galaxy .... ✅
interplanetary politics : ✅
realistic interpersonal relationships ✅
futuristic technology ✅
military battles : ❌
"To the stars!"

I'm an archer, shooting in competitions, and the junior development officer in my local club.
Sci-Fi and Adventure are my favourite genres, and I take reading seriously, like an art form, making sure the beverages, food, and setting are all cosy and appropriate. :-p
Feel free to add me as a friend. My only nosey quality is looking at what people are reading!

I'm here to try and expand my internet presence in other places and meet new people, make friends, and all that, so I'd be glad to meet you as well as try and keep up with discussions here!

I'm a mainframe systems programmer and algebraic topologist, teach liturgical chant on the side, and have logged with draft horses in upstate New York. Now I just read : ) I'm especially interested in stories that are both solid science fiction and good romance.
Since the members of this group cover many times zones (and it's already Christmas in Australia!!) I'd like to wish every one of you a happy, contented and peaceful Christmas, and may all our 2025s contain love and joy (and lots of good SF).
Welcome Jeff! For some reason Goodreads has stopped notifying me of new posts.
Happy Holidays to everyone, or at least good books to read.

You are among those showing last active October.
Log out on all devices at same time then log in again. This usually fixes last active date. This didn't work first time for me but for most it does.
Most apparently did not quit getting notifications but since I also was not receiving notifications I
Went to settings, checked notification settings which were okay so I made minor change to about me, saved settings.
Went to GR home page, clicked on general update but then just clicked cancel.
Please let me know whether or not this works.

Looking forward to connecting with fellow fans and diving into some great discussions about the genre! 🚀

Welcome LoonyLemon and happy New Year
Just curious, are you a FTL or a Light limit Space Opera writer?

My name is Erik :)
Let’s go down the list and see what my answers are 🧐
Favorite Book: Uh… I’m not sure. Maybe Dracula or The Giver. I’m really not sure.
Favorite Genre: Fantasy, historical books, and self-help books are great too, but I’m boring for liking those a lot 😂
Favorite TV Show: I watch anime and most live-action shows bore me; but I enjoyed Breaking Bad and Chernobyl.
Favorite Movie: I’m a filmmaker, so I can’t say 100% for sure, but if I had to pick one I’d say either Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy or Hot Fuzz.
I can’t pick a favorite food, but my day job is at Universal Studios Hollywood as a Production Assistant. That and I’m an author (quick mention because it’s short notice, I have a book signing at the Flintridge Bookstore on March 9th 4 PM, if you want to stop by)
Other Hobbies: I like to hike, ski, and ice skate :) I’m a New Englander, after all!

Name: Rhett
Favorite Books: I don't have any yet. I tried Ensign Flandry and it was close but no cigar. I'm hoping the Honor Harrington books are my thing but haven't read them yet.
Favorite Genres: Space Opera, Historical Fiction, books about wizarding schools
Favorite TV shows: Firefly, Mystery Science Theater 3000
Favorite Movies: the original Star Wars trilogy
Favorite Food: Mac and cheese
Day Job: Cybersecurity Engineer
Hobbies: Playing computer games
Other: My favorite subjects to read about are space fleets doing battle, geopolitical conflicts, and good old-school heroism.

My name is Riech (rich) Cruz...and no, I am not a man. ;) I get asked that a lot, because of my name.
I am a Goodreads author, but some of my FAVORITE books to read are the ElfQuest Series, No One Knows, etc.
I don't really have any favorite genres, as I like them all...except horror. Not really a big fan of that. However, I would like to read a horror story, just to see how it is written.
My favorite TV shows, back in the day, was Robotech, and both Battlestar Gallacticas. (Star Trek Next Generation was also a great one!)
Favorite movies are: Notebook, Star Wars, and Armageddon.
My favorite foods is anything with pasta and lots of cheese or rice with lots of gravy!
I am a banker by day, pilot, and author by night!
My favorite hobbies are writing, drawing, and flying. I am a pretty average person, I guess, who lives an everyday life, but loves every minute of it. I like to meet people, who have like interests but often find it hard to find people like me.

My name is Phil, and I’ve just picked up reading again…
I wish I had done this sooner! Since I like Sci-Fi movies TV Shows and Videogames I’d figured to join a group that seems fitting!
I’m also trying to cut down on screen time in general and reading is an excellent solution. I haven’t read a whole lot but I did finish the first book in the Murderbot series and quite enjoyed it!
Any suggestions are more than welcome, and I’ve put some books on my want to read list just to get me started.
Favorite Books: Don’t know yet
Favorite Genres: Sci-Fi, Detectives, Mystery, Cyberpunk
Favorite TV shows: Firefly, My Name is Earl, The X-Files
Favorite Movies: The Arrival, Star Wars
Favorite Food: Pizza
Day Job: IT
Hobbies: Guitars, Music, Games.
Welcome Phil! I’m a retired software developer myself, which involved a lot of IT work. We have a lot of books on our group bookshelf each of which has a discussion thread somewhere. Feel free to post comments on any of the old discussion threads if you read the matching book, or post a new thread in General Discussions to ask a question.

i adored dune when i was younger, it seems too cold to me now. i adored isaac asimovs stuff.
a lot of the sci fi i like is disguised as fantasy, or reads like fantasy, like anne maccaffrey's dragon series.
i usually prefer fantasy to read, i adore mercedes lackey. i have 38 of her books. but i got into space opera in my first real work so here i am.
fav tv shows. Star Trek, any except the latest movies with chris pine. (i like chris pine, but the movies were, well, done differently.) nothing wrong with them but not to my taste.
also i like stargate, all 3 shows. even sgu, though that i liked less than the other two.
favourite movies. Star wars the originals and peter jackson's LOTR. the two best trilogies in film fiction in my opinion, each the king of their own genre.
I spent a lot of time in quebec canada so poutine is one of my favourite things to eat, as my weight and cholesterol levels can attest.
don't have a day job, retired i guess mostly.
My fav hobbies are archery, knife throwing, video games, and painting miniatures for DnD which i don't get to play anymore.
anyway, that's me. :)
Welcome Nicole! The nomination threads for our June discussions were posted today. You are welcome to nominate or second a book on either thread. You are welcome to comment on any of the old discussions for that matter. There are a lot of great books on our bookshelf (and some so-so ones too of course).

Welcome Steph! But you may have misunderstood our group. We discuss Space Opera, mostly books, sometimes movies and TV. I don’t recall us ever discussing role playing.
Authors please note that self promotion is only allowed in the Self Promotion area of this group.

My favourite books are:Sapiens,Da Vinci Code,Encyclopedias,History
Left handed,daydreamer

This group is for space opera. If Sapiens is space opera, post your question in General Discussions giving the title and author. The others you mentioned don’t sound like space opera at all, although I could be mistaken.
Ranvijay wrote: "Thanks! Also can someone recommend me a book like 'Sapiens' or give me a review on 'The Rise and Fall of The Third Reich' and recommend any indian myth/medieval novel, have read amish tripathi btw."
Ranvijay, this group is focused on space opera, which is a sub-genre of science fiction. It sounds like the recommendations you're looking for are mostly nonfiction. Of course you're welcome in this group and we hope you might enjoy reading some space opera. But you might also want to try some of the other Goodreads groups that are focused on nonfiction. Or, if you're on Facebook, there's a Serious Nonfiction group there that I know has discussed Sapiens, and alternatives, and has had reviews of The Third Reich. Here is a link to that: https://www.facebook.com/groups/serio...
