Nathan Senthil (nathansenthil) | 5 comments Hello. I just got a rejection from one the agents who had my full. She was my greatest hope. I really couldn't figure out what's wrong with my work. It's already been betaread twice and checked for grammar and what not. But the author who did it was a romance writer. So now I seek an author who writes in the same genre as I do and needs CP themselves. I would love to swap and help each other out.

So about the book, it's basically your serial killer/ police procedural finished at 88k words. I'd love to work together and grow together. Please let me know here.

Thanks so much in advance. :)

Keith Oxenrider (mitakeet) | 1171 comments Did the agent say anything about why she said no? There are lots and lots of reasons why they'd say no, even if they liked the story. Unless she said something specific, or, perhaps, nothing at all, you may have no cause to worry.

That being said, debut authors generally have to be near perfect in order to get representation, so perhaps you'll want to consider the services of a developmental editor, one specialized (or, at least not specialized elsewhere) in the genre you're writing in.

BTW, your website is unreachable, you should check to see if it's gone down.

Nathan Senthil (nathansenthil) | 5 comments No she didn't. It's a form rejection. Yeah, I heard that debut books need to be perfect. I'm trying to do the same.

Yeah, my website is down. I should renew it.

Thanks, Keith.

Keith Oxenrider (mitakeet) | 1171 comments Well, you got read, which is more than any of my queries did.

If you're open to it, I can read your first 10K words and let you know what I think. PM me if interested.

Ben | 2 comments Hi Senthil,

Like you, I have had agents read my full and not taken the next step, and I just got longlisted again for the Bath awards but did not make the shortlist cut. I made the shortlist two years ago but it did not lead to me landing an agent. It's driving me crazy. I'd love to swap beta reads. My novel is mystery/crime at 97,000 words. For me, I'm looking for what would make this a great book, and I'm sure you are looking for the same. I read a lot of serial killer/police procedural novels. Let me know if you are interested.

Ben

Nathan Senthil (nathansenthil) | 5 comments Thanks, Ben. I compleu relate to the frustration. I messaged you my email.

Alexander Thomas (alexander_thomas) | 66 comments Hello Senthil- I'd be happy to swap if you're still interested. I've got a 78K Epic Fantasy I'd like feedback on (separate posting).

Your situation + manuscript sounds similar to Ben, so I'm guessing you are set up. But if you have time for another partner, let me know.

Same caveats I gave Ben: I read a lot, including mysteries and thrillers, but haven't critiqued any before. But I have critiqued over 20 manuscripts and can probably give helpful feedback.

If interested, feel free to ping me at alexanderthomasauthor @ gmail.com

Arleen | 2 comments When the government "downsized" my position as a federal investigator, I turned to private investigation. Nearly 25 years later, I am writing about my experiences working cases in Las Vegas, NV.
My critique partner will not get the entire book at once. These are short stories. I want to know which tales to leave in and which ones to toss.

Interested? Contact me at arleensirois@gmail.com

Carol | 4 comments I'd love to exchange Beta reads. I'm a retired criminal lawyer -- defense side for ten years, then prosecution side -- who loves to write and critique. :)
I've written a quirky murder mystery -- a 72,000 word novel that's quite sound, but I need someone to brainstorm with me to add more subplots, etc, and to give me brutally honest opinions. I'd do the same.
:)

Jennifer Shields Rand | 12 comments Hi Senthil,
I see this post was from July. Are you still looking for a CP or beta reader?
I have a polished manuscript, 96k, that is a dark mystery. I'm interested in honest general feedback from a reader's perspective. I don't have experience as a CP or beta reader but I'm an avid reader of dark mysteries, thriller, and suspense novels. If you'd like to swap, email me a jennifer_rand@ msn.com. Otherwise, I hope you are finding success.

Jennifer

Nathan Senthil (nathansenthil) | 5 comments Hey Arleen, Carol, and Jennifer.
Sorry for the late reply.
I'm unfortunately not in need of CP anymore.
I already worked through my MS with four amazing CPs and now my book is also accepted for publication. :)
But I would love to do beta for you, though I am way behind on my schedule. I need to work on two manuscripts of my other betas before I begin to work on yours. Not to mention working on my own MS after the editor goes through it. But if you can afford time, then I would love to help you out.
