FALL 2014 READING CHALLENGE
I am thrilled to see another challenge for our group. I love them. They encourage me to read more from my shelves and I love seeing what everyone else is reading. Happy almost Fall everyone!
I always have plans to fully participate and then I don't come back and update. So I will just start with 3 and see if I can complete that :-)
Dustin Crazy little brown owl wrote: "I always have plans to fully participate and then I don't come back and update. So I will just start with 3 and see if I can complete that :-)"sounds like a plan ;)
Dustin Crazy little brown owl wrote: "I want to read HOUSE OF LEAVES!"that is on my tbr-it'supposed to be really creepy (and it works for at least 2 of the tasks:)
Can Dean Koontz's Frankenstein Dead and Alive work for Domestic Violence? I think so because Victor beats his wife Erika.
Dustin Crazy little brown owl wrote: "500+ pages! That is not the task for me :-)"lol-i usually avoid long books too but i have more than a few on my tbr that i really want to read.
i'm pretty sure
is a long book but some of the pages only have one sentence so it's not too bad. ellen hopkins books are usually pretty big too but because of the writing style they're shorter than they appear.basically there are loopholes to that task but no worries-there's always the other 6 to choose from ;)
Dustin Crazy little brown owl wrote: "...but some pages only have one or two words on them :-) OK, I think I can do House of Leaves"lol we must have been writing our comments about house of leaves at the same time
Dustin Crazy little brown owl wrote: "Can Dean Koontz's Frankenstein Dead and Alive work for Domestic Violence? I think so because Victor beats his wife Erika."that definitely counts
I tried to read House of Leaves a while ago and it creeped me out so badly I quit reading it. Maybe I should try it again.
Christine wrote: "I tried to read House of Leaves a while ago and it creeped me out so badly I quit reading it. Maybe I should try it again."i'm a little intimidated by this book- i actually took it off my tbr a while ago and then recently i put it back on my tbr- i want to at least give it a try but i heard it really plays with your head.
Dare to Dream buddy read?i realize everyone's schedules are different but if anyone is interested in doing a buddy read let me know and maybe we can all read it together-no worries if buddy reads aren't your thing-either way i'm just curious to hear what everyone thinks of the book
:)
I heard the same thing about Threads too, it plays with your head. I think a buddy read is a great idea. Its definitely a book that needs discussion. I have the same edition as Dustin.
I want to read "House of Leaves" and will do a buddy read if anyone else wants to. Will have to check if the library has a copy tomorrow. Happy Fall!
i have to get a copy of it from the bookstore-it usually doesn't take them long to order something for meafter we all get our copies-we just have to pick a start date for the buddy read-looking forward to it- i was scared to read this alone lol
I suck. Lol. I dont currently have a computer that goes online... my external wireless card broke on my computer... I am going to buy a new computer instead of getting a new wireless card. I am on my sister's laptop right now. I got a new job pushing shopping carts for usually 9 hours a day at Wal-Mart. Its a very tiring job. I am going try my best to keep up with this challenge. I am still slowly reading Salem's Lot. I guess it works for a door stopper since I've taken so long to read it.
Josh wrote: "I suck. Lol. I dont currently have a computer that goes online... my external wireless card broke on my computer... I am going to buy a new computer instead of getting a new wireless card. I am on..."Glad you're joining us, Josh!
p.s. any stephen king book is a doorstopper lol ;)
p.s.s. you don't suck-everyone in this group is awesome-hope you're able to get a new computer soon :D
Ok, I finished the 1st book for the challenge but I feel I cheated a little. I read Dry Ice and its 505 pages, barely qualifying for doorstop status. I tried to use it as a doorstop and its a bit iffy, lol. The book was good, one of the last Alan Gregory series I have left to read. I kind of read them out of order. Happy 1st official day of Fall!
Thanks for the update, Christine! (i normally read books well under 500 pages so dry ice counts as a doorstopper to me ;)Happy Fall :D
Dustin Crazy little brown owl wrote: "I love Dry Ice! :-)"It wasn't my favorite but it explained a lot.
Happy Autumn everyone, another great challenge this year thanks Rachel! I will start my challenge with #5
I have a confession, "House of Leaves" came in from the library and is due Oct. 10th, I can renew it once, but have been slowly reading it, currently on page 27. Wondering if anyone else has been able to get a copy of it. Odd book.
unfortunately, i won't have it till the weekend- I don't want to hold anyone back from starting it now if you want to- i thought i'd have it by now but its been a crazy month
I started House of Leaves right after I first posted about it because I own the book, but I haven't picked the book up in two weeks. I will keep working on it. The first thing that was frustrating to me about the book was the damn cover flap which can not be used as a bookmark due to the pages sticking out farther than the front cover. The next frustrating thing is the footnote story overtaking what is supposed to be the main story. I would be reading a footnote but it wouldn't finish by the end of the page. I turn the page and I must jump back into the other story.

I am struggling with this book, the footnotes and the book flap are annoying. On page 50 and thinking of taking it back to the library. Usually not a quitter, but life is to short!
You're gonna take it back to the library? :-) You are so funny! We can help you through this - this might be your best chance :-)
Finished
which works for #5. May be hard to see but there is a skull on a fence post. Great book. Dustin I am still working on "House of Leaves". Have not given up yet! Thanks for the support! Goodness knows that I need it!
This is my second attempt at reading House of Leaves. I may read it slow this time but I am determined to finish it. Its not an easy read. I'm glad you are going to continue, Danell!
Thanks for the update, Danell!Glad you liked The Long Walk-many king fans rate it highly but i had a hard time finishing it.
also glad you haven't given up on house of leaves :)
Sorry that House of Leaves is giving everyone a hard time -sort of glad you all are reading it slow because it might give me a chance to catch up when i finally get my copy lol ;)
I can relate to The House of Leaves because this is how my mind works. I feel at home in The House of Leaves.
