Rachel | 3524 comments Okay so i never got to the bookstore but called and had them ship my books to me-should finally get them (including house of leaves) sometime next week :O

Is everyone still reading House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski and if so are you finished or what page are you all on?

Christine | 798 comments Hey Everyone! I just finished #5 on the challenge, an orange and black cover. Wool Omnibus Edition (Silo, #1; Wool, #1-5) by Hugh Howey It was good.

Sorry, I haven't been around much. I would like to blame it on Veronica Mars. That's my story and I'm sticking to it, lol. One of my friends suggested the show to me and since then I have spent all my free time watching it instead of reading. Its very addictive. I still have one more season to go but I don't feel compelled to watch as much. I need to savor these last episodes.

Now its time to get back to House of Leaves. I hope everyone is having a good Fall so far. Halloween is almost here. :)

Danell (danellbookworm) | 685 comments I am on 497 of House of Leaves. Have two more weeks to finish it. My reading time has been cut, just started working two jobs. Not sure if I will be able to finish the challenge, will try my hardest. To bad I don't get paid to read books......ah a dream job or librarian!

Happy reading everyone!!

2 jobs has to be stressful-hope you find some time to relax :)

it would be lovely to get paid to read!

pg 497! you are kicking butt with house of leaves-it's definitely going to take me some time to read it-the writing style is going to take time to adjust to :/

I am impressed that you have been able to read 497 pages and you are working 2 jobs. I agree with Rachel, I hope you are finding some time to relax.

Its all the footnotes that are slowing me down.

message 68: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 3524 comments finished Crank Crank (Crank, #1) by Ellen Hopkins - i read the ebook but the physical book has a black cover and according to gr it's over 500 pages.

hopkin's books are tragic but the writing is beautiful-need to read the rest of this trilogy

message 69: by Danell (new)

Danell (danellbookworm) | 685 comments Well, I just received a phone call and I could possibly be working 3 jobs, hope to know more in a few days. I will find time to relax, after the holidays. Second part time job is seasonal, which I was hoping would turn out yr round, but found out three days after I was hired the store was going to be closing. The 3rd part time job usually has time for me to read, yes you read that right, read. If things work out I will be driving school bus for a different person mid day, there is a layover period of an hour and a half, which I can sit on the bus and read and still get paid. Just hope it all works out and I keep my sanity in tact!

Good Luck Danell. I have worked 3 jobs before and it leaves little time for anything else. It is okay if it is temporary, but everyone needs their down time.

message 71: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 3524 comments Good luck Danell-Hope it all works out :D

message 72: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 3524 comments i'm on page 50 of house of leaves and what really tries my patience with this book is the rambling- the chapter i'm currently reading (chapter V) goes on and on about echoes-please tell me why this is necessary lol

how is everyone else doing? i personally find the tattoo artist's story more interesting than the family story so far

also just a thought-if my house started changing shape on its own-sprouting doors and such i'd hope i would just find somewhere else to live rather than measuring it over and over again ;)

You are very intelligent Rachel :-) I like the book. I am just a slow reader which is why I do audiobooks mostly.

message 74: by Danell (new)

Danell (danellbookworm) | 685 comments I finished House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski , which works for part 6 of the challenge.

I agree Rachel, if your house changes by an unknown presence or on its own, you get out!!

Reading The Talisman (The Talisman, #1) by Stephen King for the door stopper.

Thanks for the update, Danell! Congrats on finishing that beast of a book! I wonder if it ever occurs to the family in the story to move lol

Looking forward to hearing your comments about the talisman-it's on my tbr-have heard good things about it-hope you enjoy it :D

i'm a slow reader too Dustin-this book may take me the whole challenge to finish (if i don't give up and throw it against a wall first ;)
glad you like it :)

message 78: by Danell (new)

Danell (danellbookworm) | 685 comments Writing is a talent I wish I could possess, so I feel horrible when I give a book one star. "House of Leaves" was the second book I have ever given one star. Not sure if I am to simpleminded to grasp the hype of this book or if I am just so comfortable reading mostly main stream authors. Looking forward to what others in our group think of it!

"The Talisman" is picking up speed, slower at the beginning.

Congrats on finishing House of Leaves. I am hoping I am through the hardest part of the book to read. Those pages on echo about killed me too. I am on p. 244 now.

message 80: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 3524 comments You're making great progress Christine! I'm only on page 74 :/

Does everyone's book have the appendices? The edition i have has a bunch of appendices and i think they were added in later editions but not sure if they appear in earlier editions of the book.

When johnny falls in the tattoo shop there is a footnote that says if the reader wants to understand him better then read appendix II-E which are basically letters from his institutionalized mother-i've started to read these but there are a lot of letters-the good news is that the letters don't have any footnotes ;)

message 81: by Danell (new)

Danell (danellbookworm) | 685 comments You guys are doing great! Keep up the good work! My copy of "House of Leaves" had the letters from the mom to Johnny. I read them, interesting insight into Johnny and yes NO footnotes!!

message 82: by Christine (new)

Christine | 798 comments Its moving faster now that I am on those pages with only a few sentences on them.

I missed that footnote but I do have those letters. I will read them before I move on.

glad to hear that this book picks up speed because it seems to take me forever to get through one chapter.

i agree with Danell-the letters from the mom were interesting and definitely provide some insight about johnny- after i read the letters, i re-read the footnote about when he panics in the supply room in the tattoo shop and falls down the stairs-it puts that passage in a whole new light.

Grateful for this group as well! If it wasn't for the positive encouragement from everyone in this group I would have taken the book back to the library after reading the echo section.

message 86: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 3524 comments lol- i think we all agree that echo chapter was a nightmare!

message 87: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 3524 comments i'm really not loving the family in the house - i like johnny much more-maybe because he's such a hot mess- i can't help but feel kind of bad for him.

message 88: by Christine (new)

Christine | 798 comments I am about half way through the letters and I agree with you about Johnny, definitely gives you some insight into who he is. Navidson and Holloway are my least favorite, cut from the same narcissitic cloth.

message 94: by Christine (new)

Christine | 798 comments It was a quiet Halloween here. I only had about 30 trick or treaters last night. I did finish one of the books on my challenge. I read The Sandman, Vol. 1 Preludes and Nocturnes (The Sandman, #1) by Neil Gaiman
It fits for bullying or domestic violence, which it had a bit of both in it. I had higher expectations for it.

message 95: by Christine (new)

Christine | 798 comments Oops, I read my notes wrong. Sandman is my book that has a gay or lesbian character in it. Stay tuned for the book with the bully and domestic violence book.

Rachel | 3524 comments hey Christine & Dustin- just doing a HOL House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski check/update

what page is everyone on? i'm on pg 246

i have to say most of the time i still want to throw this book across the room-

i was amused about that section that rambled about boredom (probably because i was really bored right then ;)

so far this book is original and has its moments but most of the time it feels like torture reading it :/

i'm still determined to finish it-

curious to hear about everyone's progress and what you think- do you enjoy the book more/less/the same as the story progresses?

hope everyone is enjoying the season :D

message 100: by Christine (new)

Christine | 798 comments Hey Rachel! I am on page 336. I am at the "why am I still reading this" stage. I am not sure why but I am determined to finish it too. I think it is because it is so unique. I am hoping that I will be glad I read it by the end. I thought the footnotes were bad. I just finished a part where letters and parts of words were left out, pretty annoying and slow going. I am thankful when I can read the parts about Johnny because they seem somewhat sane, lol.
