SOLVED. Sci-fi series about searching for earth's existence. [s]

This is a sci fi series about a man chosen to determine the fate of the human race to become a part of a single minded entity or keep their individuality searches space and stops at different planets for signs of planet earths existence. If it is helpful (and it possibly isn't) from what I remember the title is BLANK and the BLANK BLANK. it is also the last book of the series.

Actually, as I think about it, it's probably "Foundation and Earth" - that's the last book in the series, and the search for Earth is most prominent in that book.
