SOLVED. Book for children or young teens read around 2008 about a boy who can turn into a beaver. [s]

I read the book in German, but I don't think that it was originally written in German.
For the plot, there is a boy who has an abusive father or something and gets locked up into a shack a lot. To stay sane or he thinks of being a beaver or actually becomes beaver, I don't remember that well .
A boy in school takes a photo of a beaver from a bridge and wins the photo contest with that. I seem to remember that the photo was also the cover for the book, but actually drawn with colors.
There are also two girls from school that bully the beaver boy and think he is a witch or something and try to drown him.
It wasn't a very thick book and I remember the cover as a pretty dark drawing with mostly brown colors.
