I just joined the group, but haven't had time to have proper look around yet.

Scarlet Heavens | 361 comments Nancy wrote: "Yes, Scarlet. I think it's great to comment on new insights as we read BtS.

I suppose, since I live in a small Balkan country, I don't have to worry as much about Facebook's safety (and I have heard all the horror stories, Facebook is the best for all the stalkers and molesters and god-knows-what-else out there, so I understand why you want to avoid it).

But, Facebook is not the only platform in the world, and I love Goodreads, so don't worry, if I see an interesting theory or tidbit or observation there, I'll share it here with you too.

Scarlet, I'm so happy you will keep us up to date on entertaining speculations from the Facebook group. Your personal observations are very insightful, and it's always a delight to see that you have posted a comment.

I hope you add Brave the Tempest to the Goodreads Choice awards. (I say that with shame, because I haven't gotten around to it yet myself. I will, though. RIGHT AWAY,)

Tasha | 22 comments Cassie has shown alot of strength and leadership in BtT. She is sticking up for herself and pushing back against the Senate, dueling the covens and establishing firm boundaries with Mircea.

Hi, Tasha!

Everything you said is so true that I am just delighted that the next book is coming so quickly. Shatter the Earth is scheduled to publish Jan. 20, 2020. It is totally idiotic to feel that the book is a birthday present for me, but I'm going to take it that way and be grateful to Ms Chance.

Have you read the first two chapters of Shatter? Cassie is taking her place fully as the guardian of the timeline, and she is a magnificent Pythia, always in her own special way.

I just love the way Cassie is taking charge in her dealings with the vampires of the World Senate, Adra and the Demon Council, Jonas and the Silver Circle, and the Covens. I'm sure she will get the upper hand with fellow demi-god Caedmon as well......

Scarlet Heavens | 361 comments Probably head-cannon, but Caedmon smells like a villain.
I re-read Shadow's Bane recently, and the way Caedmon was "caught" in the cave seemed fishy to me. It seemed fishy that Johnathan managed to put himself into the Senate meeting as part of Caedmon's entourage, as well.
In the meantime, Caedmon is quite powerful, isn't he? I know Mircea's mental abilities enabled him to be privy to Cassie's thoughts (and there were a bunch of spells and charms like the geis, Mircea's bite, the Seidr link to aid Mircea with this). And it seemed to go both ways because Cassie heard his thoughts and saw his memories when he revealed the truth about Elena to Cassie, and Cassie assumed he was projecting.
But Caedmon was able to hear Cassie and Billy's mental communication with ease. Caedmon is able to stop Cassie from using the Pythian power on him. Etc. Basically, he's pretty powerful, he may be more than a simple demigod (I think his daddy is Zeus?), and yet, he managed to get himself caught in Shadow's Bane, and he was "supposedly fooled" by Johnathan's super-glamour?
Not to mention that the man Johnathan was impersonating was mentioned to have been alive for a long time, and in the same scene, we learn that oh, well, Johnathan has also been alive for a long time! What if there was no glamour? What if Caedmon had been in cahoots with Johnathan all along?

Another thing that comes to mind is the fact that Artemis' barrier was around Earth. And maybe the worlds are linked linearly, meaning that in order to get to the demons, the gods would need Earth, but what about Faerie?
We know Ares was in the homeworld of the gods in Ride the Storm, and supposedly Apollo was there too, before he crossed over.
But nothing is ever mentioned about Faerie. Is Faerie protected by the same spell? Or, are the gods perfectly able to go to Faerie?

I'm starting my re-read tonight. I'll probably comment as I read along, rather than have a massive post with all my WTF and AHA moments, as well as conclusions and speculations.

Also, it would be nice to include the first two chapters of SHATTER, because they've been out for a while and free for anyone to read.

Of course, long posts are fine, if that is preferable to any readers.

I think this is going to be informative, entertaining, and just great fun! Karen's readers are discerning, and I am frequently amazed by their insights and speculations.

Tatayoyo | 17 comments I have one question: I am reading Brave the Tempest and I saw that:

"Or the little beauty tricks that didn’t count as glamouries but still took ten years off your face."

I dont remember if it was explain in old books so my question is: What is exactly glamouries?
I remember somes fey was using it so is it a charm that you buy or something you can do( then it's seems weird because vampire can't make magic) .

Scarlet Heavens | 361 comments I think (but not sure) that glamouries were like spells/charms, sometimes in the shapes of face masks, that anyone could use for their appearance.
Additionally, mages, fey, and vampires can create their own as well, but I think the vamp glamour works differently.
Pritkin however, uses his ultra-mix of powers, so I think he creates illusions that have the same purpose.
Cassie and Rosier are wearing glamouries in Amsterdam, because Cassie doesn't know how to make one (even though she's technically a witch), and Rosier had no power on their trip to the past.
The Spartoi were using an array of glamouries over the years to hide among the human/magical population.
Cassie uses a glamorie when she goes to Mircea's house in Hunt the Moon, but the spell on the entrance renders it useless.
I think it's a charm that can have any physical shape but change your appearance (Dory could buy it).

Cassie said that Adra wore a cheap glamourie that he tried to make look more individualized. Sometimes he added a mustache. Adra adopted human habits, but resented that humans changed so rapidly that any habit he took on was hopelessly out of date the next time he used it. The example was using a snuff box in the present time.

We're so close to Shatter pub date! It will officially be a Happy New Year then!

Tatayoyo | 17 comments I just remembered this part and I found it. It's on The Gauntlet book when Kit is speaking:

"I am skilled at glamourie. Let me inside your shields and I can hide you and the girl."

So yes vampires can also cast it but I wonder how it works for them since they can not make magic xD.

I don't know how they do it , either, Tatayoyo. I do know Mircea uses a glamourie constantly to appear as a thrty-year-old man instead of the nineteen he was at death.

The glamourie can slip under extreme circumstances, though. Cassie has seen Mircea as a teenager.

I think all vampires can appear in whatever form they wish, although some disdain the effect. Jack still looks like the Ripper, and Fat Tony's head thug (forgot his name) looks like his face is so battered he doesn't have a profile, acccording to Cassie.

Speaking of Jack, I still wonder what favor he will ask from Cassie........

Cameo | 1046 comments Mod
God, I keep forgetting that Mircea actually looks older without a glamourie - it's just weird to think about.

I think that Jack will ask Cassie to either; use her time magic to make him human again, or he'll ask her to kill the Consul. I can't remember if the consul is actually his master, but I would be a bit anticlimatic if the favor isn't something monumentous. Oh or simply ask her to do nothing if/when at some point Mircea or the consul is in mortal danger.

message 64: by Nancy (new)

Nancy | 495 comments Mod
@Cam, lol
No, he looks younger without the glamourie, but he thinks it helps in impressing people in his diplomatic "affairs" if he looks like an experienced man........

The Consul isn't Jack's master. The NA Senator who had the disagreement with Mircea and left to be on the European Senate (read: love affair gone wrong, woman scorned) was the vamp who Changed Jack. She still told Anthony and others that she was Mmircea's lover.

I'm thinking you're right that Jack will probably ask Cassie to make him human again. He said Cassie would have to approve of the favor, or she wouldn't have to do it.

It seems that Cassie is coming to a more favorable view of Cleo after the fight with the second Ancient Horror who broke into the Consul's estate and disrupted the War Council. She noted that Cleo risked her life to attack the Demon as a giant cobra. I don't think she would approve killing Cleopatra. Maybe if Cleo attacked Mircea, Cassie would prevent that, but I think it would be a temporary thing.

BTW, chapter three of Shatter should be great. I'm hoping to see Dracula as Vlad the Impaler confronting Cassie and Mircea.

Tatayoyo | 17 comments In the series of characters we haven't heard from for a long time. In the end we have no more information on the future of the South American Senate since the history with Thomas?

Tatayoyo | 17 comments "She still told Anthony and others that she was Mmircea's lover"

We end up wondering how many women he has dated since time. XD
I remember he said once that they almost only frequent him on the interest side. But if he stayed with them because there was also an interest ? When you see his behavior with Pythias. So is it just to pass good time or because he was trying to get something out of them?

Scarlet Heavens | 361 comments Tatayoyo wrote: "When you see his behavior with Pythias. So is it just to pass good time or because he was trying to get something out of them?"

He specifically targeted Pythias because he was trying to convince them to save Elena for him.
As for Augusta (I think that was her name), she and Mircea hunted Drac during the time when Jack was still human and became the Ripper to impress his master. Augusta turned him into a vamp and (I think) tortured him as payment for his crimes. There's a scene in Claimed by Shadow where there is a Conclave (okay, maybe it was called something different - the meeting the senate members had every two years or so), and Augusta brought Jack there to serve as entertainment. And not in a funny ha-ha way.
Dory was also there, and she was hunting Drac with them. He captured her and left a message on her back for Mircea, and Augusta is there at Mircea's place, exiting in a nightgown, and it is implied that they were lovers at the time.
But I think KC said in a Q&A that Augusta left for the European senate on her own (or because of a dispute with Cleo, not Mircea).
I might be remembering it wrong.
As for Mircea and his women, a lot of them were attracted to him because of the power, not because of him personally, and this happened even when he was a human prince.

As for the South American senate, it's actually pretty weird. In the current timeline and present day for Cassie and Dory, that senate barely gets mentioned, and there hasn't even been a mention of Alejandro as its consul/leader. Tomas kills him, yes, but I think this happens very late down the timeline, maybe even after everything has finished in the present-day. Same as Lia. (Reading Siren Song actually made me feel a little dumb with the death scare of a certain character that we know from Lia's series that is still alive down the road).

Hi, Tatayoyo.

As to Alejandro, he is still alive in the Cassie/Dory books, because Day of the Dead is set in Oct 30-Nov 1, about three months in the future.

When I think about Mircea's many mistresses or lovers, and how Elena and the various Pythias, including Cassie, affect the events of the latest storyline, I just remembered that he and Cleopatra had a fling in Masks. So, add Cleo, Cassie, and possibly Ming-de to the major players whom he has loved that affect the wartime outcome. About Ming-de, he told Cassie that he never admitted to THAT.

With the Pythias, he certainly had an agenda. No question about that, but he likes making women happy making him happy, so there was pleasure as well as purpose.

Aside from the Pythias, I think his affairs were short-lived because most women were only interested in him for either money or power.

Shatter is going to be interesting, with the Pythia and the General in the past during Vlad's insane reign and the Svarestri having captured Elena.

I can hardly wait!!!

I finally started reading the book.

Only four months have passed since Cassie became the Pythia? It feels like it has been years! So much going on.

Cameo | 1046 comments Mod
Wow Sarah what's with the hold up? :D
Yeah it's crazy... Kind of like the John Wick movies, they only span a few days.

I can't wrap my head around only four months... in my head it's more like 6-7 months..

For me it feels like years! Not just because in reality it has been years but because so much has happened. Poor Cassie! She really needs a break.

This will take a bit. For some reason I'm not the fastest reader currently when it comes to fiction.

I really liked the scene with Cassie and Augustine about their upbringing. I felt bad for both of them.

And then I was annoyed at how dense Cassie was. It was clear that the drawing was her. But at least then she realized it and I really hope she'll allowed herself to get closer to her girls.

I finished the book and really liked it.

I'm not the biggest fan of the (seemingly) never-ending action scenes and I was glad we didn't get that many in this book.

I liked the "smaller" scenes (with Fred, Marco, Rhea etc.).
