      I am about 50% done, and really enjoying this. That said, I don't think the darker events that come later are some kind of change in the tone of the book. A child is brutally murdered very early on, within the first or second chapter, and it's a bit that's kind of brushed over quickly and only there to give a taste of life kind of thing. But it's brutal and certainly sets the tone for the horrors that come later.

      Still stunned that this is a first novel. Yes, it is brutal and bleak, but mostly because many of the plot lines are taken from real historical events. Great pick and a great read! Can’t wait to see where Ms. Kuang takes this story.
