Some have had trouble with their accounts crashing and while its easy to set up a new account and find your way back to the group its not so easy to start your bookshelves from the start. All your hard work on reviews can be lost.
Thankfully these can be backed up easily and uploaded again if you have to create a new account.
These instructions are for the Desktop version of the Goodreads pages.
1 - Select My Books from the top panel of the page.
2 - On the left hand side of the page find the option import/export and click
3. On the right hand side of this page Find the Export Your Books section and click export to a csv file.
4. Select save and the file will be saved to your documents or downloads folder as goodreads_export.csv This file can be opened and viewed in Excel, open office and notepad.
5. Do this back up every few weeks to keep it current.
6. If you have to create a new account for whatever reason to load your books and bookshelves back up follow step 1 and 2 above.
7. In the section Import from a file click browse and navigate to the saved backup (this will be saved in My Documents or My Downloads)
8. Once selected click Import Books and it will write them all to your account
Any questions let me know

a) How to add books with a link in my posts. I read that there is an "Add Book" button but can't seem to find it?
b) How to follow my friend's reviews. This one I can't seem to figure out.
Thanks in advance!
Donna

For flowing friends reviews, this is automatic.
When you opne goodreads on a desktop select Home at the top and all your friends activities including reviews are there. On a phone select updates for the same.
Tp get an email of their reviews daily or weekly click the drop down menu on the top right of the page when open on your desktop (its a small arrow pointing down beside the small version of your picture at the very top right of the screen)
Select Edit Profile from the drop down menu and select emails from the tabs that appear on the screen.
The option is given as to how often you want to receive an email of friends reviews along with a few other options.

Paul, sometime in the next week I'm going to try and reinstate my bookshelves. Any tips?
Should have checked above as I assumed it was only about backing up. Thanks.
Paul, I've successfully uploaded my saved bookshelves. I had trouble getting Goodreads to accept my chosen file but eventually it did. What the issue was goodness knows. A few of my books >10% didn't make it across. All in all it certainly beats doing 400 or so singly. So, I'm happy. :) thanks.
It worked very well as anyone who follows my updates is about to find out ;)
Yes, I did wonder whether to delete all my friends for 24 hours and then reclaim them ;)

Theresa, You can change your notifications under profile to not send updates, or just certain types of updates etc
Ah! Too late I fear! Will look into it now though, thanks :)
OK, I've un-checked the option that feeds new-books-added-to-my-shelves and will give it until Friday morning to put it back on. With luck your Updates won't overfloweth ;)

Paul, perhaps you could add to the uploading guide Diane's suggestion for temporarily suspending updates when you upload your library?

When I get more time I'll post a couple of step by steps on how to post pictures , start threads and back up your book shelves.
Any other questions this is the place to ask and members can help where they can.
