message 1: by Paul (new)

Paul I've started a topic for any questions members might have relating to technical aspects of a Goodreads forum and account.
When I get more time I'll post a couple of step by steps on how to post pictures , start threads and back up your book shelves.
Any other questions this is the place to ask and members can help where they can.

Mae (goodreadscommae) | 217 comments Nice idea Paul. Tech support used to be Declan, who helped me with everything including starting my own group.

message 3: by Paul (new)

Paul That's why it might be a good idea to have a dedicated thread. Then if one person asks a question everyone will get the benefit. It'll be a handy referral thread I hope

message 4: by Susan (new)

Susan | 4707 comments I need help. I accidentally added the wrong Cloud of Witnesses? How do I get rid of the wrong one?

message 5: by Paul (new)

Paul Go to the main page of the book you selected by mistake and scroll down to where it says what shelves you have it on. Click in there and then scroll and select option to remove from all shelves.

message 6: by Paul (new)

Paul That way is for a phone app. To do it on a PC navigate to your bookshelves and simply click the x at the far right of the entry .

message 7: by Susan (new)

Susan | 4707 comments Thank you, Paul. I got it done.

I-like-to-read (akakate) Good idea Paul.

Perhaps you could ask one of the mods to sticky this thread.

Paul Sorry for the delay but first tech post on the way.
Some have had trouble with their accounts crashing and while its easy to set up a new account and find your way back to the group its not so easy to start your bookshelves from the start. All your hard work on reviews can be lost.
Thankfully these can be backed up easily and uploaded again if you have to create a new account.

These instructions are for the Desktop version of the Goodreads pages.

1 - Select My Books from the top panel of the page.

2 - On the left hand side of the page find the option import/export and click

3. On the right hand side of this page Find the Export Your Books section and click export to a csv file.

4. Select save and the file will be saved to your documents or downloads folder as goodreads_export.csv This file can be opened and viewed in Excel, open office and notepad.

5. Do this back up every few weeks to keep it current.

6. If you have to create a new account for whatever reason to load your books and bookshelves back up follow step 1 and 2 above.

7. In the section Import from a file click browse and navigate to the saved backup (this will be saved in My Documents or My Downloads)

8. Once selected click Import Books and it will write them all to your account

Any questions let me know

Donna McCaul Thibodeau (celtic_donna) | 1150 comments Hey Paul, I am very technologically challenged and I was wondering if you could teach me how to do two things.

a) How to add books with a link in my posts. I read that there is an "Add Book" button but can't seem to find it?

b) How to follow my friend's reviews. This one I can't seem to figure out.

Thanks in advance!

Donna
Above the comment box see

comment add book/author (some html is ok)

If you click on add book/author, it open s up another box, where you type in either author name or book title and then click on search.

Donna McCaul Thibodeau (celtic_donna) | 1150 comments Thank you, Thomas! I think even I can manage that!

message 17: by Paul (new)

Paul Good man Thomas. Looks like you've gotten your head around that one Donna.
For flowing friends reviews, this is automatic.
When you opne goodreads on a desktop select Home at the top and all your friends activities including reviews are there. On a phone select updates for the same.

Tp get an email of their reviews daily or weekly click the drop down menu on the top right of the page when open on your desktop (its a small arrow pointing down beside the small version of your picture at the very top right of the screen)
Select Edit Profile from the drop down menu and select emails from the tabs that appear on the screen.
The option is given as to how often you want to receive an email of friends reviews along with a few other options.

message 19: by Allan (new)

Allan I've just changed to an android phone and when I try to access the discussions via the updates it goes to the first rather than last comment-how do I get round this?

message 20: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Is there an arrow on the top right of the screen so you can switch from oldest to newest post?

message 21: by Paul (new)

Paul Hit the menu button and select show newest post first / upwards arrow depending on the phone . The Menu button is usually accessed by pressing below the bottom left of the screen

message 22: by Allan (new)

Allan Thanks guys - I found the button on the bottom right-it may take me a while to get used to the app though, so apologies to all in advance!

message 23: by Paul (new)

Paul Its a few kinks in it all right.

message 24: by Paul (new)

Paul When Ive a decent connection or on Wi Fi I open goodreads on Chrome rather than the android App on the phone.

message 25: by Allan (new)

Allan I'm just trying that way now, and it is a lot more like the iPhone app that way, so I'll probably just access via Chrome myself.

message 26: by Paul (new)

Paul Chrome is better than the other ones as it doesnt try to redirect to the App constantly

message 27: by Allan (new)

Allan Have any Android users any suggestions regarding notification apps that are good to use, so that I can see notifications from Goodreads on my lockscreen? At present, I don't seem to be getting any, which is a big difference from my iPhone-help would be appreciated!

message 28: by Paul (new)

Paul Sorry I've never used it I just have email alerts which pop up on my phobe for it.

Thanks to Paul for his very clear instructions on how to backup my bookshelves!

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

Paul, sometime in the next week I'm going to try and reinstate my bookshelves. Any tips?

message 31: by Paul (new)

Paul Follow the instructions I wrote above I think. Any hassle send me a PM

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

Should have checked above as I assumed it was only about backing up. Thanks.

message 33: by Paul (new)

Paul I'm just too lazy to write it again ☺

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

And why should you? :)

message 35: by Paul (new)

Paul True. Let me know if it all works ok .

message 36: by [deleted user] (new)

Will do.

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

Paul, I've successfully uploaded my saved bookshelves. I had trouble getting Goodreads to accept my chosen file but eventually it did. What the issue was goodness knows. A few of my books >10% didn't make it across. All in all it certainly beats doing 400 or so singly. So, I'm happy. :) thanks.

message 38: by Paul (new)

Paul Glad it worked to some degree

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

It worked very well as anyone who follows my updates is about to find out ;)

message 40: by Paul (new)

Paul Uh oh

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, I did wonder whether to delete all my friends for 24 hours and then reclaim them ;)

message 42: by Diane (new)

Diane Theresa wrote: "Yes, I did wonder whether to delete all my friends for 24 hours and then reclaim them ;)"

Theresa, You can change your notifications under profile to not send updates, or just certain types of updates etc

message 43: by [deleted user] (last edited Oct 22, 2014 07:41AM) (new)

Ah! Too late I fear! Will look into it now though, thanks :)

OK, I've un-checked the option that feeds new-books-added-to-my-shelves and will give it until Friday morning to put it back on. With luck your Updates won't overfloweth ;)

message 44: by Diane (new)

Diane It's under feed which is under profile. Next time. :-)

Paul, perhaps you could add to the uploading guide Diane's suggestion for temporarily suspending updates when you upload your library?

Next time :0

message 47: by Amy (new)

Amy Lynch | 5 comments Hi, I'm new to the site! Just launched new book 'Bride without a groom' and need advice - how can I tag it as "humour" or "chicklit" please.
Thanks, Amy

message 48: by Paul (new)

Paul Sorry I meant to get back on this and forgot. I'm not sure on tagging to be honest . I would say you should check out the Goodreads Librarians group as they would have a better knowledge of this

message 49: by Allan (new)

Allan Is anyone else apart from me having issues with accessing group posts on the Android Goodreads app? I can see notifications, but am having to access them via my web browser. Deleting and reinstalling the app hasn't helped. Advice appreciated!

message 50: by Paul (new)

Paul Its an issue all over with the Android App Allan. I've tweeted and emailed Goodreads helpdesk and they've assured me they are working on it but its nearly two days causing trouble now.
