Tweenager visits relative in American south, gets involved in a mystery

A girl (about 12) goes to visit a relative (an aunt, I believe) in the south for the summer. I read it in the 1990s, and I think it was set in present day then. (I remember when the aunt was showing the girl around, she mentioned that the "privy" was outside, so it was an old house.) From what little I recall, the girl got involved in a mystery involving a couple of spirits. I think one of them wanted her to get a message to the other one. I remember that at one point, she is given a trinket that she needs to solve the mystery. I think she falls out of a tree and ends up in the hospital toward the end, and I remember the doctor asking if she wants to let go of the trinket she was holing onto, but she refuses.

I realize this may not be enough to go on, but I've been looking for this book for a few years and any help is much appreciated!!
