Jmegan | 24 comments I read this one in the early 80's. I loved it, and read it several times, but now I can only remember bits and pieces.

The books is about a boy, maybe 9 or 10 years old? His father is a photographer, and the boy wishes at one point that his dad would bring home a pay cheque every week like other dads.

His mother is a librarian, or someone who restores books. At one point she gets annoyed at people who use Scotch tape to repair books, since it leaves marks and can't be removed.

There is some incident with a cat getting into the father's darkroom and spoiling all the prints.

Another incident about the hallway floor being newly varnished, and the boy puts down newspapers so as not to leave footprints on the floor. The newspapers stick to the varnish, and his mother gets mad at him.

I think the boy's name is Chris or Christopher.

Thanks!

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments Jmegan, do you remember anything about the cover?

Did the book specify what types of photographer the father would take? Portraits, landscapes, sports, etc?

What was the tone/mood of the book? Funny, somber, anxious, etc

Jmegan | 24 comments I don't remember the cover at all, unfortuately. The book is written from the boy's point of view.

It's a coming-of-age novel, so there's no specific crisis to be resolved, just a "point in time" snapshot of that part of his life. I don't remember the time period the book covers, but my impression is that it wouldn't have been more than a year or so.

The parents seem to be having some difficulties in their marriage, although I don't think that's a central point of the plot, and I don't think it leads to divorce.

The overall feel is kind of Judy Blume-ish, although I'm pretty sure she's not the author. Does that help?
