SOLVED. Fantasy - swordsman taught to become best fighter in the world by fighting a wizard's phantoms (such as the ghost of Achillis).

The wizard creates ghosts of old fighters to train him. If the fighter loses he dies, painfully, and then wakes up to go again. Eventually he loses to a great ghost and the wizard says, 'yep you're probs the best now'. Fighter says 'but I lost'. Wizard says 'of course you lost, that was the ghost of achillis. No one alive can match you'.
