I only read the first chapter to the book, but I know it's a fantasy book (maybe YA but I'm not sure). The book starts with a wizard / magician and I think he lives in a treehouse sort of thing with either an assistant or familiar. Then he hears wolves (or demon dogs, he comments on how they weren't nice) and then a baby crying. I think the baby was left there by the mother and I think she was hoping the wizard would look after the baby?

I think the actual book might be from the boy's perspective but I'm not too sure.

I read this in a library during the mid-2000s I think.

I found it, it's called Blat Magic.

It's a pretty obscure Australian book so I'm not surprised I couldn't find it.
