Lily Vagabond (lilyauthor) Hey, I'm not dismissing what you're doing and of course best of luck to you, I only posted because I felt the need to also say that crowdfunding isn't for everyone and not for every project.

The key is to have a clear, reasonable objective. Personally, I don't have one right now, so I wouldn't consider crowdfuning at this point in time. If or maybe when I do have a clear objective, only then would I consider crowdfunding.

Virginia | 116 comments Interesting. I'll be sure to check into that more carefully. In my case all of the funds (unless I manage to exceed my stated goal by quite a bit -which does not seem likely at the moment) will be going directly into the costs of producing the book: cover art, copy editing, formatting, design etc. So, even though through the process of kickstarter the money is in exchange for goods, according to kickstarter's website it's a one time donation on the part of the backer and then according to my taxes it's a business expense. Of course, I will be careful to look into that to make sure.

Virginia | 116 comments Thanks, Lily! I didn't think you were dismissing it (at least not after your second post or so) but I do think you raise a valid point. There are certainly risks involved!

Virginia | 116 comments And as you say, it is not for everyone or every project.

Patrick Rutigliano | 83 comments Hmm ... as long as you're itemizing specifics like the cover art, that might be okay. Just be careful about maintaining records of everything.

message 56: by Virginia (new)

Virginia | 116 comments Definitely! Record keeping will be of prime importance. Heck I saved the receipt I got today for making some promotional bookmarks to hand out at a writer's festival this weekend. Save everything! :-)

Virginia | 116 comments Oh, and here's what kickstarter has to say about taxes: Kickstarter tax info

Someone almost harshed my mallow on this topic but then again I wasn't even considering it when I first looked at it. I don't know..I feel as though I'd be doomed to fail but I like a good challenge.

Virginia | 116 comments It's a delicate balance. They talk about the week two slump, which I am currently in, and it's not a reassuring time. Apparently it's the spot after the initial enthusiasm when all of your friends and family are just hearing about the project and excited about it, and before the final days of HOLY POOP THERE'S ONLY 5 DAYS LEFT TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN! And during that time you feel like no one cares and nothing is happening. As I mentioned earlier, my perspective on how good an idea this was changes daily. :-)

Virginia | 116 comments Well, for anyone keeping tabs, the slump seems to be over. We're up to 83% funding! 4 days left, and the heat is on! Here's the link again if anyone wants to hop on what can now be certifiably called a bandwagon. ;-) Blade's Edge Kickstarter

*edit* Also, for anyone who's interested there is a lot of added material to the Kickstarter page compared to the beginning, including reflections on how things are going.

Jason Crawford (jasonpatrickcrawford) | 565 comments Both books in production. I'm also happy to say I'm a backer of Blade's Edge! Huzzah!

message 64: by Virginia (new)

Virginia | 116 comments Yay on all counts!!! Thanks so much! Official backer thank you note coming soon! :-)

Virginia,
I'll get started on your questions for the interview soon but I'd also like to ask you some side questions about kickstarter if you don't mind.

Virginia | 116 comments That would be fine!
