Abridged or collected works

I'm dealing with two versions of Von Heidenstam's Karolinerna, initially published as two books.

I've read a french translation which appeared to be a collected & abridged version of both books, and now I'm reading an english translation of book 1.

My question are:
-what do I do with the french book. Do I combine it with another edition?
-do I merge book 1 with other editions of book 1, or couldn't all editions (book 1 and 2, or collected) be merged?

Only combine books with the same content. Translations are combined with editions with the same content.
So book 1 is combined only with editions with only book 1.
An edition with book 1 and 2 should be combined with other editions that contain both book 1 and 2.
