Infante was known for his experimental and soulful singing. Infante’s first appearance in a movie was in 1939 as an extra in En un Burro Tres Baturros (Three Men from Aragon on a Donkey) . 🎶 A Tribe Called Quest was an American hip hop group, often considered a pioneer of alternative hip hop and jazz rap. The group formed in Queens, New York City in 1985. Q-Tip (Kamaal Fareed) and Phife Dawg (Malik Taylor) were childhood friends. Q-Tip performed as a battle rapper, occasionally as a duo with classmate Ali Shaheed Muhammad. In 1985 Q-Tip and Muhammad began making demos, with neighborhood friends Jarobi White and Phife Dawg joining shortly thereafter. They called themselves “Crush Connection” and later “Quest,” but finally settled on A Tribe Called Quest after the group Jungle Brothers started calling them that in 1988. Around that time the group formed the Native Tongues collective with Jungle Brothers, De La Soul, Queen Latifah, and Monie Love with the intention of promoting Afrocentrism, positivity, and eclectic sampling.

🎶 In 1989, when group members were only 18-19 years old, they signed with Jive Records and released their debut album, People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm on April 10, 1990. The album had a playful lyrical style and lighter content about topics like safe sex, vegetarianism, and being young. The album was met with critical acclaim. The first two singles released were “Bonita Applebum” and “Can I Kick It?”. “Can I Kick It?” samples from Lou Reed’s song “Walk on the Wild Side.” The members say they didn’t make any money from the song, because it all went to Reed.

🎶 Their sophomore album, The Low End Theory was released in September 24, 1991, with “Check the Rhime” was the lead single. Around this time Phife Dawg had learned he had diabetes and had considered leaving the group; however Q-Tip encouraged him to increase his participation and step it up. The Low End Theory also had more lyrical interplay between Q-Tip and Phife Dawg. Tribe was becoming known for their fusion of hip hop and jazz bebop. Member White left the group midway while recording this album because he wanted to pursue a career in the culinary arts. Their next album, Midnight Marauders was released in late 1993 and they had their highest charting single with “Award Tour.” Other singles included “Oh My God” and “Electric Relaxation,” which became the opening song for the sitcom The Wayans Brothers.

Their next album, Beats, Rhymes, and Life was released in 1996 and was a marked difference from their previous albums in that it was less playful and had a minimalist R&B and jazz infused sound. The year before the album’s release, Muhammad and Q-Tip had converted to Islam. The change left Phife Dawg feeling distanced from the group and he was starting to lose interest. Their fifth album, The Love Movement was released in 1998 and coincided with the announcement that this would be their last album. All the members in the group hadn’t even hit 30 yet. The group decided to put aside their differences and record another album, We Got It from Here…Thank You 4 Your Service, with a number of featured guest performers like Kendrick Lamar, Busta Rhymes, Jack White, and Elton John. Phife Dawg died in 2016 from complications related to his diabetes before the album was complete.
