I read a short story during the 1980s in middle school. It was set in the future and had auto driving cars. I think at an automated gas station someone was telling the story to someone else about a family that got trapped in their auto car and had been driving back and forth, from city to city, auto refilling the car for a decade or more.

That sounds like a story from Freaky Storeies, a Canadian TV show from the early 00s.Maybe they based it on that.
Do you remember if this was in an anthology with other stories or was it a short story given to you by a teacher?
I don't remember which class I was in or if it was just something I got from the library shelf (at that age I just started reading everything since I had already read the "popular/well-known" stuff). It was an urban legend type of short story except it was written before there were auto-driving cars. Maybe it was from the reading section of the yearly standardized testing...hmmm, I might remember more if I don't dwell on it.
It's Road Stop by David Mason. THanks! You made me think about searching for it differently. https://archive.org/stream/1963-01_IF...
