message 107: by Maureen (new)

Maureen | 1 comments The Shining when I was 12. My dad bought it when it was first published and I had to wait for him to finish it first!

message 108: by Joe (new)

Joe (jp490) | 6 comments The Shining. Was never a regular reader until recently. Friends and family suggested I start with Kings older novels.

message 109: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (mcnurdy) Embarrassing as this is to say: it was "Mr. Mercedes". After watching "The Shining" and "Christine" movies I had decided I did not like Stephen King's books. After reading one book I understood and became a believer. His writing is superior. (His politics; not so much.)

message 110: by Damini (new)

Damini | 132 comments my first Stephen King book was also Stephen King's first Stephen King book :P "Carrie"

message 111: by Dollie (new)

Dollie | 73 comments Carrie around 1978. That's where it all started for me.

message 112: by Quentin (new)

Quentin Wallace (quentinwallace) | 175 comments Mine was Night Shift and it would have been back in the 80s when I was a kid. Still my favorite King book.

message 113: by Katie (new)

Katie | 3 comments “It” was my first book by him. I read it as a teen and it was the first big book I couldn’t put down. I just got so attached to the characters.

Ash (Accidental-Ducky) | 8 comments "Misery" was the first one I read. Watched the movie in fifth grade and snuck it out of the high school section of my school's library in sixth grade.

message 115: by Rubi (new)

Rubi (rubi86) | 4 comments My first book by him was "It" when I was a teenager. It was the first big book that I read in my life and coudn't put down. So scary and amazing! It made me start loving King from then on.

message 116: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Hope | 4 comments I think mine was Salem's Lot, right after watching the TV adaptation starring David Soul and James Mason.

message 117: by Kandice (new)

Kandice | 360 comments Carrie, in 1981, caught up quickly and have read each of his books as soon as they are released ever since. I've even been known to take a vacation day to rip through one, only to read it more slowly and savor a few months later.

message 118: by Bruce (new)

Bruce Carrie. I just read it recently.

Kandice | 360 comments Bruce wrote: "Carrie. I just read it recently."

Did you like it? Do you think you will read more?

message 120: by Bruce (new)

Bruce Yes. I started Salem’s Lot.

message 121: by Kandice (new)

Kandice | 360 comments Bruce wrote: "Yes. I started Salem’s Lot."

My very favorite of his!

message 122: by Michael (new)

Michael (micky74007) Salem’s Lot. Good book, lousy movie.

Helena_Sunri | 6 comments The Langoliers

message 124: by Kara (new)

Kara (ladykarasgmailcom) My first Stephen King book was The Stand and then I heard from a friend that Eye of the Dragon had some of the same characters so it was my second one.

Kandice | 360 comments Michael wrote: "Salem’s Lot. Good book, lousy movie."

Which miniseries are you talking about? David Soul or Rob Lowe?

message 126: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll never forget. I was 12. It was 1982 and I found Cujo in the school library. I skipped class and hid to read it.

Erika | 475 comments The Gunslinger.
I actually have only read that by Master King
(I know, blasphemy!) BUT I’ve been a huge fan of his stories on screen. I’ve seen almost all of his films & TV shows.

Earliest memory: I remember being scared as a kid in elementary school when I snuck out of my room at night and peeked at the living room where my dad was watching Tommyknockers. I wasn’t supposed to be watching lol but I hid behind the couch peeking around at the “scary green lights” taking over the neighborhood! 😂

message 128: by Eileen (new)

Eileen (horror_bisexual) | 28 comments Mine was Cycle of the Werewolf, I read it when I was about 13 and pretty much became obsessed

message 129: by Ian (RebelGeek) (new)

Ian (RebelGeek) Seal (rebel-geek) | 426 comments I’ve been a King fan since my teens. I think my first book was Needful Things read by him on cassette. I think it was 14 tapes.

message 130: by Shay (new)

Shay Carrie. I was in 6th grade and everyone was giving my parents shit for letting me read it. I’m so glad they did 😁

message 131: by Ian (RebelGeek) (new)

Ian (RebelGeek) Seal (rebel-geek) | 426 comments I've been thinking & I read The Running Man when I was about 13, so that was probably my 1st SK book.

message 132: by Mihika (new)

Mihika Pet Semetery, one of my all time favourites :)

message 133: by Luke (new)

Luke Night Shift, probably aged 12-13

message 134: by Gavin (new)

Gavin (thewalkingdude) | 118 comments It was Dreamcatcher when I was 13 or so. Didn't really like it the first time I read it. Can't exactly why, but i thought it was boring. I tried reading it again a couple of years later, and absolutely loved it that time. Been a Constant Reader since ever since.

message 135: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) It was either The Stand or 'Salem's Lot.

Dreamcatcher is awesome! One of my favorites. The movie is great too!

message 137: by Michael (new)

Michael J. (michaeljclarke) | 634 comments Carrie Read it in paperback the same year it was released. Made a big impression on me.

How did you stumble upon The Running Man? As the original Bachman book, or published as a King book? I love that story and am always a little sad it's not more well read. I'm glad it grabbed you!

I think it was this cover, but it's been many years.
The Running Man by Richard Bachman
It said Bachman on the cover, but I think there was something that said it was a pen name of SK. I had already seen the movie, but I thought the book was more interesting. I'd love to see a more faithful adaptation done.

message 140: by Steven (new)

Steven Rigolosi | 16 comments THE STAND. My folks bought it for me as a vacation read (I was a young teenager at the time). I remember sitting at the pool reading it, and lots of adults kept interrupting me to say "Wow, you're so young to be reading such a big book." I never forgot that. Shouldn't we be encouraging our kids to read big books? :)

We absolutely should! Every time I see a young person reading a book (of any size) I let out a cheer!

message 142: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Hill (sassyhill) | 154 comments Needful things.

message 143: by Kara (new)

Kara (ladykarasgmailcom) My first one was also The Stand. I went on to read over every year until the unabridged version came out. I've read it several times also, but the original version is best.

message 144: by Alessandro (new)

Alessandro Amici (aamicicontentcreator) | 24 comments My first S.K. book was IT. I think it's the best Stephen King's novel.

Definitely a top 5 for me.

message 146: by Felix (new)

Felix Dorian My first one was MISERY when I was like 15 it 16 and it scared the crap out of me. I was so afraid of the book, you know, the physical copy with the neon green cover (That’s what the german edition looked like), I had to put it under the bed because I couldn‘t sleep with it lying on my bedside table.

Good times.

message 147: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 16 comments The Shining!

message 148: by J (new)

J B | 23 comments About to start The Green Mile. I’ve never seen the movie. Figured it would be cool to read the novel first.

message 149: by Debbie Y (new)

Debbie Y | 82 comments The Shining

message 150: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Barnett (laurenjanebarnett) | 4 comments My first was Pet Sematary, I didn’t read another for more than a decade for some reason, but it was The Shining, and was brilliant.
