Priscilla Keresey (priscillakeresey) | 10 comments Authors! I'm relaunching a successful self-help book under a new title. I'd love to cross-promote. Are you an author with a robust email list and solid social media following? I have a 3000+ responsive email list and would love to promote your book if you'll help promote mine. Message me... let's help one another and collaborate to get the word out. Obviously we won't be competing with one another... but if another author wants to trade promotions, let's do it! - Priscilla, author of (formerly) Fix Your Screwed-Up Life!

June Ahern (juneahern) | 78 comments Let me check out your book and I've always have been and continue to be supportive and recommend other authors' books. I don't have the email list # you have since I mostly retired released much of my clients' contacts. But.... we'll see. Off to see your book.

Just saw your message. Sounds like a great idea, but unfortunately I don't have such a list. My books are with small publishers and I haven't done much promoting but put up a website.

I am going to try and launch a formerly self-published, out-of-print book with Publishizer. Maybe if I can generate a following with the Crowdfunder video that I am going to do, I might be able to help.

Thank you June! If you email me I'd be happy to send a PDF so you don't have to purchase it. I'll be re-titling it as I said, so if you read and like I'd also appreciate a review... but only once I've re-launched the new version. My email is pkeresey@gmail.com.

I'm interested (more curious, and I'll use the word "interested"). I'd like to read your book before I commit further. You mentioned a PDF version above. If that's available, I'll give it a look.

Virginia Arthur In this vein, but very much objective, I started a group called Indies at the Round Table. It is a pay-it-forward mutual review group based on books you actually want to read! (Imagine this!). I got tired of the "daisy chain" approach/being forced to read books I would not read otherwise with the added effect of how can I offer a great review if I don't like the book/genre to begin with? Only after READING THE RULES, any Indie Author can add their books to the group shelf with the agreement they then review the same number of books off the group shelf within a year+-. So if you add three of your books, you agree to review three of someone else's that YOU get to select based on your own personal preference. There is a catch--you have BUY their books (though people post giveaways) so they get an actual sale. The other catch is the review must process must be unbiased. (Again, read the rules. They are mandatory and violators are removed, fyi).

We are having a blast reading each other's books and I just got a surprise review too which is wonderful.

We welcome all Indie Authors once they have read the Mandatory Rules.

I was about to comment "Does anybody review a book simply because they enjoyed it anymore?" and saw your post. I'm a big fan of pay-it-forward. Just joined your group. Printing out the rules so I can review them (kidding!). Thanks.

Jim Vuksic For whatever reason, the vast majority of avid readers choose to never post a rating or review. Those that do, post them to share their personal, and therefore subjective, opinion of a book with fellow readers, not the author.

Many novice authors are unaware that a regulation enforced by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) requires that any review obtained through direct solicitation, payment in the form of cash, gift card, free book, or promise of reciprocation must specifically state so at the beginning of the review.

Authors would benefit much more by focusing upon striving to continuously improve upon their basic writing and narration skills rather than obsessing over receiving ratings and reviews.

Priscilla Keresey (priscillakeresey) | 10 comments lethe wrote: "Review swaps violate Goodreads ToS, as has been discussed elsewhere in this group."

Just to be clear, I wasn't asking for a review of my book or a review swap. I was offering to promote another author's book in my newsletters and email marketing efforts (I have a 3000+ audience), in exchange for an equally-equipped author promoting mine to their (robust) audience.

John Molloy | 19 comments Yes Pricilla,
I would be interested in uploading my book 'Steady as She Goes' for you to review. You can look it up on Amazon, it has got some very good reviews also on Goodreads. Let me know your thoughts on this. I can also promote your book on our local book club Scribblers.
John

Oh good grief. So it doesn't bother you that review swaps are not only unethical, but a clear violation of both Amazon and Goodreads TOS? This is why readers are so distrustful of reviews these days :(

ONCE AGAIN: I'm not offering reviews or asking to exchange reviews. That is a violation of rules for this site and Amazon. I was looking for other authors with healthy email lists or social media followings to CROSS-PROMOTE. In other words, I'm willing to connect my own personal audience to another author's books, blogs, or publications if s/he will do the same with mine. NOT REVIEWS.

Priscilla, my newsletter list is at about 1600. I might be interested in cross-promoting. I have one book that specifically may appeal to your readers which is spiritual fiction. You can contact me directly.

Yep, and it’s pretty easy to spot. It’s gotten so bad I dismiss every “review” posted by an author unless I personally know that author is honest. Ditto those who only post positive reviews. So many reviews by author read like ad copy not an honest review, and aren’t very helpful.

message 26: by Jim (last edited Jul 22, 2019 05:55PM) (new)

Jim Vuksic Unfortunately, novice self-published authors who blatantly disregard established rules and protocol pertaining to literary marketing, promotion and the posting of reviews, tarnish the reputations of those who learn the do's and don't's of the business prior to entering the field.

I post a review for almost every single book I buy and read. However, I am an author who appreciates reviews and knows other authors do too. Readers are more interested in getting into their next book. If it's mine, I'm all for that.

message 28: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Bates (sarahbates) | 83 comments I post a review for every book I read and for the books of authors I know personally although their books might not be in a genre I like. Sometimes my remarks are tactful, but they are always truthful. I think it's important for authors to support each other, but if I cannot read the book, I don't post a fake review. I also don't post plot lines in a review because reading them spoils the story for me.

I hope when you post reviews when you personally know the author you disclose that in the review. And you don’t post them to Amazon because doing so is a violation of Amazon TOS

Sarah Bates (sarahbates) | 83 comments "If I don't read the book, I don't post a fake review." And this includes books written by people I know. BTW I wonder how Stephen King and James Patterson handle this rule.

You will still have to disclose your connection to the author.

I notice you failed to answer my question, which I believe gives us the answer. And the reason you do not is exactly the reason why you should.
