This book is based on a little boy called Bertie. The book is divided into three different sections, written in three different episodes of Bertie’s life. In this particular book Bertie is given a robot dog as a birthday present. Without realising Bertie begins to neglect his pet dog Whiffer and this leads to Whiffer playing up in order to win back Bertie’s affection. In the second part of the book Bertie has the pleasure of lunching with the Queen and his grandma at Buckingham Palace.
I think this book is funny and is great for children that are reading for pleasure. I would recommend it for independent reading and for children in ks2. The book is written in a very easy to read simple format and is a good chapter book for those that have just started reading chapter books. I enjoyed reading about Bertie as I can imagine a child relating the his character back to Horrid Henry as I found myself doing just that. It is entertaining and the little boy takes on a cheeky yet charming persona. The book has a lot of speech too which would be great for children who are starting to use speech marks in their writing, they can use this book to identify the different ways speech is used.
