YA, read in 2013, moving between dimensions? Main characters male and female highschool students

Okay, I have a somewhat difficult request..
My daughter and I read a YA book, ( pretty sure) 1 in part of a series about 5 years ago. We can not remember the title, character names (she thinks the teen boy may have been Micah) or much of the story.

What we both do remember is that the teen boy and girl meet at school, (high school we think) can go between dimensions or alternate realities (it's new to them) and at one point do so at a school and find a classmate that has been missing locked up under playground bars with a bunch of vines everywhere of course their are bad guys/creatures as well. Other than that we just can't remember.

I know it seems close to impossible but I figured between all of us book lovers someone may have read it or heard about it.

Does anyone have any idea what this book is?? If it was even part of a series.
We remember really enjoying the book and want to re-read and continue series. I would love to find it and surprise her with it. Any help with this would be appreciated, thank you 🙂

How about The Boy Who Reversed Himself? 4th dimension stuff, boy and girl are friends, weird creatures. However, it's a little older (1986) and not part of a series.
