The Story of Lucy Gault - William Trevor

This is a wonderfully evocative story set in Ireland after World War I. It is plot driven, but beautifully written and I was so engrossed I almost finished it in one afternoon. It was tragedy wrapped up in quiet stoicism. The characters are described so skilfully that their decisions are plausible, inevitable almost. This was my introduction to William Trevor and I am anticipating reading more of his works.
