Ceres Lovelight | 2 comments Greetings,

My name is Ceres and I am searching for an editor/mentor to help me finish my first book, as well as future novels. I would like someone reasonably affordable as I can only pay around $1000 for this first book. My manuscript is 41,026 words plus an outline for the remainder of the story. As for genre, it's a fairy tale which is available for all ages but I do have a target audience towards young people who love princesses. While I’m not familiar with the editorial process I want someone who will be able to deliver a complete work by the end of November. I’m not trying to undermine anyone’s capabilities or skills in terms of the dollar amount I am offering or the time frame I am requesting; however, anyone that feels they can assist me in a genuine truthful manner please contact me asap.

P.N. Elrod (pnelrod) | 90 comments Unless you are looking for developmental editing or a ghostwriter, the last person you hire is an editor, who goes over finished manuscripts to ready them for publication.

We all want feedback for what's there or problem solving help, but that is not an editor's job. You seem to be in search of a ghostwriter to finish your project.

You will certainly get interest from those looking at your thousand bucks, but you get what you pay for and decent ghosts are way more expensive, in the 5-figure territory.

Also, it is not likely you'll get that money back in sales. Just because you have a book to sell doesn't mean a publisher or readers will want to buy it.

Shifting from gloom and doom -- here is where you can get the help you need at NO COST. This is a safe, troll and flame war-free message board whose members are paying it forward. Many are pros in the publishing industry.

It is free to join. Please, do so. You need to read their articles (sticky notes) to learn how publishing works. You won't be wasting time and money on the wrong things like the post here. The more you know the better you will fare in the shark tank.

If you want to be a writer--a good writer--it ain't cheating to read the how-to books. I knew someone who balked at that, thinking she should rely on feelings, talent, and inspiration alone, and she never did finish or sell anything,

If you have the fire in the belly to write, then go through the library like a threshing machine and read everything on the craft and the industry. There are a lot of scam operations out there who delight in inexperienced newbies with money, so be sure to follow WRITER BEWARE as well.

Good luck!

Hi Ceres,
I second all that PN Elrod said (voice of experience and wisdom there!) My website: http://www.bffediting.com has a Resources page that has some helpful website links for writers. Feel free to reach out to me if you have questions. I think you are still in the developmental stages, but I offer assessment services that could help you pinpoint your next steps. I also offer developmental assistance, as well as other stages of editing, when you get to that point, and for much lower fees, since I am used to working with new authors on a tight bud. BFF Editing, bffediting@gmail.com
Wishing you all the best,
Kate

Ceres Lovelight | 2 comments Hi P.N. Elrod,

Thank you so much for the detailed response to my post. It was VERY informative and (with the help of your many links) I feel like I now know what to look out for in terms of finding an editor. I believe that in my original post I misspoke because I didn’t mean to imply that I literally needed someone else to write the book for me. Instead, I meant an editor to help me with copyediting, proofreading, character/plot issues and so on. I definitely don’t want someone else to write this book but thank you very much regardless.

All the best, Ceres

Kelsie Engen (kelsieengen) | 2 comments Hi Ceres!

I would love to help you out with your fairy tale project. I am something of a fairy tale lover, and am even writing my own series loosely based on Snow White and other fairy tales. I've also written short stories retelling other fairy tales. Fairy tales have been a passion of mine for many years, and I would love to help another author in their own retellings.

However, I'm also an editor and love helping people develop their stories. You can check out my services here: http://kelsieengenauthor.com/wwes-edi..., or email me at scriptor.librorum@gmail.com.

I would, of course, be willing to do a sample edit for you to see if we're a good fit working together.

I wish you luck in finding the best editor for your project!

Kelsie
