Children's Book, Young boy befriends a ghost who joins him to learn in school

Read this book in the late '90s, but upon reflection it was probably published between '60s-'80s. I remember the plot centering around a lonely schoolboy who somehow befriends a ghost, and the ghost joined him in school because he also wanted to learn. The main boy also may have been bullied. The cover had the two of them walking together. Any assistance is greatly appreciated! The book was written in English, and I believe it had illustrations.

Ghosts Who Went to School? This was a favorite of mine when I was in second or third grade.

I don't remember Willie being particularly lonely, and Wilbur started school on a day that Willie was absent (Wilbur sat at Willie's desk, and did some math problems -- correctly, as it turned out). There was a bit of bullying in the beginning of the book (Hank painted a rude scene on the window Willie and his sister was painting).
