What I like most about Sam is that he's an asshole. It's sooooo satisfying* to have an asshole character in romance, because you know he's going to get his comeuppance. You know he's going to be brought to his knees by love. It's going to be so enjoyable to see him suffer. The anticipation is enough to make me cackle with evil glee. 👹

*But asshole characters don't always work. Not every author can pull it off. Personally, I need the other MC to not be a doormat. An asshole + a doormat = DNF. I also need a convincing arc where there's adequate payback for the assholery. It needs to feel balanced to me, not like some idiot got away with being an idiot without sufficient repercussions.

cat reads (thecatwhoreads) | 108 comments I love how stoic Sam is, but that it's all surface. Seeing under the surface is challenging but so rewarding.

I was just reading Art of the Murders 2, and I love intelligent people. Jason is hurt by the photos Sam leaves by his bedside, but it also doesn't take him long to connect the dots.

Also, <3 Jason so much. I totally get why he'd rather spend half a day in a mausoleum than break Tiffany glass windows. I feel the same way. And I also get Sam's exasperation that Jason wouldn't break a freaking window to free himself and would totally feel the same way.

Such wonderful observations and so well put, Teal. Thank you for taking the time to post this! I kept nod-nod-nodding the whole time I was reading your comment. You pointed out the exact reasons why I love Jason—and also Josh's other artistic characters!—so much.

And yes, the delicious dynamics between the two characters is such an important thing. I do love the intense push and pull in Jason and Sam's relationship. :-)

This is one of my favorite scenes in the whole series. Those Tiffany glass windows are described so beautifully through Jason's eyes even in unusual, emergency circumstances. It's easy to identify with Jason and his decision! And it's a clever dilemma, isn't it? Up to what point is one willing to value and protect art, culture. (And what does your decision, your actions, tell you about yourself?) Like in the book, it does divide opinions greatly, doesn't it.

message 70: by Goge (new) - rated it 5 stars

Goge | 641 comments I love art and I really love when mystery takes place in the art world. Jason and Sam are both exceptional characters. They both contribute to the story so perfectly. Nobody is perfect, yet they both work on their own insecurities when comes to a relationship. I like that in real people, and I like it in books.

SamSpayedPI | 596 comments I'm Grey Lines with Black, Blue, and Yellow, by Georgia O'Keeffe. Which seems pretty vaginal, IMO, although experts may disagree.

I'm also conceptual art (which I really don't like).

In The Monuments Men Murders we're in for a mystery for sure! So why not practice solving one?

In our next game you need to solve a murder case: A man got killed in his office. The suspects are Edison, Maxis, Jason, Janna, and Sofia. A calendar near the man has 6, 4, 9, 10, 11 written in blood. Who is the killer?

If you want, you can use spoiler tags when posting your answer.

ahahaha! I forgot the title of this post and just googled 'Ilona Andrews romantic arc'. This fits so well with your Sam analysis!

It's not a lot, just a few mentions, but still! Alphahole needed to be a thing.

This is such a fun read! Thanks, cat. I'm only halfway through but I'm loving it.

"Alphahole has no chill and takes no crap." LOL

"For example, when the heroine cuts off hero’s head in Lothaire by Kresley Cole, it is understandable that hero may take steps to avoid reoccurrence of this unfortunate incident in the future." Okay, I don't read m/f, but I'm going to have to check this one out.

I love that Jake gets mentioned a couple of times. :D

And Sam fits unmistakably into her "alphahole" definition.

cat reads (thecatwhoreads) | 108 comments Ilona Andrews certainly have their tropes, but god I love them. Hidden Legacy is a damn near perfect trilogy.

I keep hoping they'll write a short story of one of the m/m pairs from Kate Daniels.

Hey, you all did exceptionally good solving a murder. All answers were correct!

Also, I'm glad to see this turned into a pool party. :-) When you're tired splashing around in there, would you like to have pizza? With pineapple or without pineapple? Never mind, I'll order a nice selection!
