I believe I started reading this book between 2000-2005. No idea when it was published. I would guess it's set in the 80s or 90s but can't be sure. The story is about a man who does magic and starts a bakery. He also hires teens/young adults to work for him in the bakery. He gains something like a religious following. I believe the story is told from the perspective of one or more of these workers/followers. The man I think writes a book and/or has a lot of discussion about the importance of roughage in the diet and using the toilet/being nude when using the toilet. This is all I remember about the plot. I thought the title was something like ___ the Magnificent or ___ the Magician but I've failed to find it based on that.
