Chapters 1-5 Summary
In the start of the story, we get to know our characters. We have Mr. and Mrs. Darling and they have three children, Wendy, John and Michael. The family also has a Newfoundland dog named Nana. The dog becomes a caretaker of the children and an excellent one at that.
In chapter 1, Wendy learns that she will not be a child forever; eventually she will need to be growing up and acting more her age. Wendy doesn’t like the idea of growing up at all. She wants to stay where she is and living in her Neverland. Neverland as JM Barrie puts it is “a map of a person’s mind.” He continues on to say that “Neverland varies a good deal” between every person since everyone’s mind is different. Wendy believes she sees Peter Pan in her Neverland and she tells her mother about him. Soon afterward, while Mrs Darling is in the nursery, she sees Peter Pan too.
Peter Pan and his fairy Tinker Bell come to visit the children in the nursery one night. They are looking for Peter Pan’s shadow which he has lost. However, it had been in the nursery waiting for Peter. In looking for his shadow, Wendy wakes up. She ends up talking to Peter and learns that he has no mother. Throughout their conversation, she decides to go with Peter and Tinker Bell to Neverland. She of course takes John and Michael with her.
On their way to Neverland, the children follow Peter and Tinker Bell. Once they get there, Peter tells them all about Captain Hook and how awful he is. Suddenly Hook attacks by shooting at them as they come into Neverland. The girls go one way and the boys go a completely different way in order to escape the shots. Tinker Bell uses this to take advantage and play a trick on Wendy.
In chapter five we meet a variety of characters. We meet the lost boys, the pirates, and the “Redskins”. The first five chapters give readers a very good understanding of who is important throughout the story, as well as the setting. I really enjoyed the first 5 chapters and hope you did too. If you have any comments, questions or concerns let us know and write them on this thread. Happy reading!
