And it STILL isn't finished!!! They are 19 hours behind us, but that is still the afternoon on the 2nd over there - much later than they said it would be done. They must be running into all sorts of problems. What a time to do it!!!
We have some progress with an update from one of the mods
I am happy to let you know that while the maintenance continues, we were able to restore some of the previously-affected areas to normal functionality. The following should now be working as usual:
* number of books visible on your My Book page
* number of reviews visible on book pages
* progress updates visible on the homepage
Thanks for your patience!

Hi mods wondering if you could help me with a problem I’m having. I want to add a book to one of my challenges, but it won’t come up in the add book/author drop down box when I search for it or the author. It’s: Sunshine by Kim Kelly.
I’ve searched many times, but maybe I’ve missed, but I’ve noticed the author doesn’t come up either.
Thank you!

Also it works if you type in all of "Sunshine Kim Kelly"
Thank you so much, Ace. 😊 Never thought of typing in title and author, but I’m pretty clueless when it come to these things. Thank goodness for helpfu memebers like you 😊

Either the ISBN or the title and author will always get your book if it's in the system :)
Thanks Ace!

This came in at work today. Annoyed at people who want everything for free! Authors deserve an income. https://www.copyright.com.au/2019/03/...
I just saw Thomas Keneally and Meg Keneally being interviewed on TV for the launch of #4 in the Monsarrat series. They said there will eventually be 12 books! And he’s pretty impressive for 83yo, I must say.
Hi Mods and everyone, I am not sure this is the right place for this question but I couldn't work out where else to put this. How does this group define Aussie Authors and Aussie Books? Do we have a definition? I ask as I see Dervla McTiernan books listed as belonging in to the Aussie category. I know she lives here now and has written her books since living here but she grew up and spent most of her adult life in Ireland. I have also just started reading No Friend But the Mountains: Writing from Manus Prison by Behrouz Boochani which has won a range of Aussie awards but felt unsure how to classify the book as I don't know that he would call himself Australian.
This has all just got me to wondering if we have general guidelines about this and what others thoughts are?
Cheers
Bron
Our guidelines are: anyone born in Australia and now lives overseas is Aussie. Anyone born overseas and now living in Australia is Aussie :)
Could someone give me a definition of 'gothic fiction'? I've read that it's dark and romantic but not horror or supernatural. I'm reading Jane and the Damned about Jane Austen as a vampire and England being overthrown by the French and I'd like to think it would qualify as 'gothic'. It is dark with romantic overtones. Can anyone give me an idea of gothic fiction? Thanks. 🙂
Diana, here's the goodreads definition which I think would be pretty close to correct :) https://www.goodreads.com/genres/gothic
Excitement in our street ! The house on the corner opposite us is to be used in the filming of The Secrets She Keeps this coming tuesday. The entire street will be disrupted and cut off so possibly the best option is to head for the boat till it's all over. :-) This morning there was a team over there tarting up the garden in readiness. I cannot imagine what scenes they will be filming I tried hard to read the book but that bloody whingey Agatha gave me the pip and I gave it away. Perhaps I should try again if its good enough for a mini series.
Sounds exciting Trish - though I dare say you locals will tire of being disrupted after too long :)
How exciting, Trish. The thing I remember about this book was the line in my review: 'hold onto your prams'!
Our September challenge will be released in a couple of days (when our travelling moderator returns!)
Not sure where to ask this question so I’ll pop it in here.I’m looking for recommendations for graphic novels. I’ve never read one and not sure where to start.
I'm not a graphic novel reader Sharon, but I have a couple which I've loved.
The Complete Maus by Art Spiegelman was recommended as a good one to start with by my son - I loved it.
The Kite Runner: Graphic Novel by Khaled Hosseini was one I read after I'd read the book, and I loved it too.
Another by Shaun Tan -
The Arrival - was also a 5 star read for me. I don't think you can go wrong with this author.
I hope you find something you love :)

I dont normally read Graphic Novels but being a big fan of Outlander by Diana Gabaldon I did enjoy the graphic novel which covers the first part of Outlander from the point of view of Jamie instead of Claire
The Exile: An Outlander Graphic Novel
This is one for the Angela Marsons fans.I saw she had a prequel to her Kim Stone series but I can’t find it on Goodreads or Netgalley. It’s called First Blood.
https://www.amazon.com.au/First-Blood...
Here it is Veronica -
First Blood: A completely gripping mystery thriller by Angela Marsons
Not sure why it's not on NetGalley though...

And it was there but is now archived as publication date is today - https://www.netgalley.com/catalog/boo...
A question about book genres.I don't shelve my books by genre on Goodreads, although I know many do, and I am glad they do because it allows me to identify new books that fit into my favourite genres!
But I recently reviewed what I had read in 2019 and was looking at what I read the most of.
It was no surprise to me that it was "Crime/Mystery/Thriller/Suspense", but I started wondering how do people choose to shelve between these categories? I have come up with my own definitions, but I doubt these are universally held
Crime = police have a major role in the book
Mystery = amateur or private detectives, police a supporting role and are often a bit slow or stupid
Thriller = Lone person does improbable things - likely to be made into a movie starring Tom Cruise
Suspense = someone is messing with someone else's head - makes my tummy hurt
How do other people separate them? Would be interested to know!
It Really is a personal thing I guess - a lot of books now are not true to anyone particular genre. I saw one read by another person recently set in space after earth had been destroyed and taken over by cruel alien overlords - there were elves and werewolves and aliens- a Murder and a romance. So she shelves them on Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Paranormal, dystopian, mystery, romance and erotica (yes one of THOSE stories)
I like your take on Crime - I would probably expand to say doesn’t just have to be a murder - could be kidnapping, bank robbery, fraud - any way the law of the land is broken. Is not meant to be an easy read so not cosy or comfortable to read.
Agree with mystery
Thriller is edge of the seat with explosions, car chases, danger on every page - not a Tom Cruise fan, so wouldn’t watch it - but put up Bruce Willis, Van diesel, Harrison Ford and the delectable Dwayne Johnson and Idris Elba and I’m your girl!
Agree with you about suspense - would add you’re scared but don’t know why
Personal definitions are the ones that matter! I have over 60 shelves, many of them entirely personal. Actually, I just added a new one.... "available-to-give-away-just-ask "
anyone see any books on there they want?

I wouldn't watch the movie if it had Tom Cruise either! Actually I have a "rule" that if I have read a book, and really enjoyed it, I do not watch the movie if one is made. Just leads to aggravation and annoyance!
I've been wondering where Deborah Challinor has got to? From what I can see she hasn't updated her blog since 2015 when her last book A Tattooed Heart was released. I love her writing, and it's around this time of the year that I am reading her latest, so I'm kinda missing her valued contributions to my reading pleasure 😔
I hope she is ok? Anyone have any info?
Don't you follow her on FB Jools? Her latest release is From the Ashes in 2018 and she's writing House of Sorrows at the moment. Her next book, Sisters of Mercy is partly set in Vietnam and they had a trip there planned for early this year. All this from her FB page :)

I looked at her online blog and website which hasn't been updated. 🤦🏻♀️ Geez I have been out of the loop haven't I? I'd better check FB then hadn't I?!
Looks like I've got some more books to add to my tbr.
LOL! Yes follow her on FB - she hasn't posted on there since October but that would be the writing and the Vietnam trip :) And you have! I haven't read her last published yet either :)
