SOLVED. YA historical fiction set during WWII siege of Leningrad

I’m looking for a book I read in middle school in the mid 1980s - it was set during the siege of Leningrad during WWII, and featured a young boy trying to survive by hunting for potatoes in the frozen winter forest around the city. His father died driving a lorry over the frozen lake while trying to smuggle food into the city (causing recurring nightmares for his son). I think it was an award winner, but not sure if it was Newbery, Caldecott, or something else. Any help would be much appreciated.
