Some background information:

Willa Cather based her novel on the life and career of Bishop Jean-Baptiste Lamy and his vicar general Joseph Projectus Machebeuf.

Amazon is taking longer than normal in shipping my copy. I'm dying to start reading it. As it happens, I have a business trip scheduled for next week, and it's to my shock to New Mexico! How "coincidental" is that!! God must be telling me something with that. I just don't know what.

I found the book free on archive.org

Isn't it? It is one of those books one could read once a year and never tire of it.

I edited the first post. I had initially written "chapters," but in my edition, which is the same as the featured cover, they are named "books". I know it really makes little difference, it is just for consistence sake.

They are called books in my edition too. Each “book” has at least two chapters.

Celia (cinbread19) | 117 comments I have finished this phenomenal book and thank you for pointing me to Catholic fiction. I have read other books by Cather, but this one impressed me the most. It shows a mature friendship between two men - Catholics and priests. I admire them both.

You're welcome, and don't forget right after this we will be taking up Mariette in Ecstasy.

For those seeking more information on the region and the history from Cather's novel, I've just been made aware of the biography of Jean Baptiste Lamy, who is the real life character Bishop Latour is based on. The bio, Lamy of Santa Fe, by Paul Horgon. Looks like a good read and I know Paul Horgan is a fine writer.

You can also read a book review in Dominicana, a magazine put out by the Dominican Order at the Dominican House of Study. Here is the article by Br. Bernard Knapke, O.P.:
