28% - (view spoiler)[I really don't like when a series continues but each book focuses on a different character. Especially since I loved Ismae and Duval in the first book. But I think it works well in this sense.

So was it mentioned in the first book that Sybella was d'Albert's daughter? Or stepdaughter or whatever. Because even though it wasn't that long ago I read it, I really can't remember that. I think I would remember that but who knows?

Feeling a bit weird with Julian. I don't like what is being implied by him visiting Sybella at night and her literally having to her maid sleep in her bed with her to stop him coming in. Was he raping her? Its implied that something sexual was happening but Sybella hasn't really outright said anything about it. Hmmm..

Also, I hate the Abbess in this book. Why does she hate Sybella so much? Is it because she was raised as a d'albret?? Either way, she's awful to Sybella and I'm pleased that Beast 'kidnapped' her to save her life.

Didn't Ismae leave the convent in the last book? Why is she still so involved in everything? Yeah, she's with Duval now, but she says when she meets back up with Sybella that it was her idea for the convent to send the task of saving Beast. Why would she be doing that when she left the convent?? I'm confused. (hide spoiler)]

Finished - (view spoiler)[I'm so mad that d'Albret didn't die!! Like what the eff, man?? Because Death doesn't want him in his realm? Surely you could send the guy somewhere else?? You'd think there would be a place you would keep the souls of the really bad people that no one wants to see or hear from again.

Anyway, let me say ONCE AGAIN I love Sybella and Beast. I may love them even more than Ismae and Duval.

I thought Ismae had a tragic backstory until we got into Sybella's. DEAR GOD. It's very heavily hinted at that she had some.. relations, say we say, with the two boys that she thought were her half-brothers, most of it non-consensual. Then she begins having relations with a stable boy, gets pregnant, AT 14 YEARS OLD, has the baby and because he's an all round dick, d'Albret kills the baby in front of Sybella, as well as killing his fourth wife, Beast's sister, because she dared to try and protect the baby. As well as the abuse that comes from being a woman in the company of d'Albret. She straight-up did not have a good time growing up.

Now a book about female assassins was never going to be light-hearted, but shit, this book was dark. The baby-killing scene was one of the darkest scenes in the whole series so far, and it's such a brief scene. Definitely haunted me!

I really love this series, and while I'm not keen on Annith, I look forward to seeing where the story goes next. (hide spoiler)]
