Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments Having a headstrong three year old in my household a lot of the time, I see the resemblance between Tiffany and a youngster, but, since no one around here allows temper tantrums or even angry faces, our lives are much happier. Our young man is easier to discipline and explain things to because he already knows that he is not the center of the universe (although he does have to be reminded once in a while). Poor Tiffany! She never has learned it! When you miss out on life lessons that you should have learned as a toddler, everyone suffers. At her age, really an adult in many societies, she has yet to learn that the planets don't revolve around her, and she's past the age of learning discipline in a gentle way.

QNPoohBear | 1640 comments Tiffany needs a good telling off. Let her have her tantrum about it and move on. Once her suitors see her for what she really is, they'll move on and she'll be stuck alone. Her behavior towards Patience at all times is horrible. I think Tiffany is an extreme version of Emma and Patience is like Jane Fairfax. I'm tempted to say Tiffany should get together with Waldo's cousin Laurence, but that sounds like a disaster in the making. At least Laurie has figured out how to get what he wants without tantrums.

I wish there was more Ancilla in the story and less Tiffany tantrums. I see Ancilla falling in love with Waldo and why and I remember not liking the misunderstanding but it's making more sense now I'm reading more slowly and not skipping to the end LOL!

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1136 comments With regard to a pairing of Laurie and Tiffany

Miss Tiffany feels she is entitled to a peer for a spouse. She may discount Laurie because of his lack of a title.

I'm at the misunderstanding part now, and I find that I keep putting the book down and wandering off for a while. I tend to hate cross-purposes, because I always think, "Could we just talk about it, for Pete's sake!" But I'll let this one go by without too much fuss, because the wrap-up is so deliciously funny!

Oh, I think that since Laurie has seen Tiffany in all her glory, he'd run for the hills (or Ireland) before he'd marry her!

Michaela | 68 comments I´m reading the Nonesuch for the first time, in a paperback edition, and I find it hard to understand: many words I don´t know and many persons I must get used to. But besides Waldo there is mostly Tiffany in the centre with all her tantrums, of which Laurie is repelled so far. Wish there was more of Ancilla who is falling in love with Waldo, and who seems to be a wise lady.

She is very wise, Michaela, but also human enough to make the occasional mistake...

I agree, Michaela, there's too much Regency slang in this one, and it interferes with the read at times. Some helpful person on one of the threads in this group mentioned a Regency slang dictionary; here's a link: http://www.georgette-heyer.com/slang.....

I also think there may be too many characters, and you don't always know which ones are going to be important and which ones not!

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments I kept trying to notice the slang, but somehow I didn't! And Laurie is one of those characters that seem to be a side one, but is he really? Hmmmmmmm

Thanks for the link Abigail!
