I REMEMBER ONE SPECIFIC SCENE FROM THIS BOOK. The main character is a boy, and he goes to a magic show. He meets another boy there who is smoking cigarettes. When the show starts, he sits with the boy he met and the boy goes up on stage for a hypnosis act. This was preplanned and he was selected ahead of time.

When the hypnotizer tells him to take off his pants, he either has no underwear on or ratty underwear, so he gets embarassed but still doesn't stop pretending he's hypnotized. The main character can tell he faltered a little, though.

The hypnotizer says something, while he's asking the boy to take off his pants, about how he is wearing silk garments and fancy clothes, even though he's not, since he's trying to convince him he's wearing something he's not (because it's hypnosis.)
