SOLVED. SF (SciFi) near future, post apocalypse, pilot of small plane. [s]

I read this within the last few years. A virus or plague has killed most of the population. The book centers around the owner / pilot of a small plane who, with one other person (a military veteran, IIRC) live together at an abandoned airport, constantly on alert for attacks by roving bands of survivors.

The pilot takes off on a journey to find other civilized survivors, eventually returns with two other people. Don' want to say more as it would give too much away.

I'm thinking the title had something to do with stars, or maybe birds, but I might be totally off the wall on that.
