Aly (alyp_01) | 11128 comments Emma Saylor doesn’t remember a lot about her mother, who died when she was ten. But she does remember the stories her mom told her about the big lake that went on forever, with cold, clear water and mossy trees at the edges.

Now it’s just Emma and her dad, and life is good, if a little predictable…until Emma is unexpectedly sent to spend the summer with her mother’s family—her grandmother and cousins she hasn’t seen since she was a little girl.

When Emma arrives at North Lake, she realizes there are actually two very different communities there. Her mother grew up in working class North Lake, while her dad spent summers in the wealthier Lake North resort. The more time Emma spends there, the more it starts to feel like she is divided into two people as well. To her father, she is Emma. But to her new family, she is Saylor, the name her mother always called her.

Then there’s Roo, the boy who was her very best friend when she was little. Roo holds the key to her family’s history, and slowly, he helps her put the pieces together about her past. It’s hard not to get caught up in the magic of North Lake—and Saylor finds herself falling under Roo’s spell as well.

For Saylor, it’s like a whole new world is opening up to her. But when it’s time to go back home, which side of her will win out?

Aly (alyp_01) | 11128 comments Oh no, I'm sorry you're having a hard time getting through this. I listened to it, which helped me get through quicker.

Rachael (classycupcakezz) | 5933 comments All done! This was just a 3 star read for me.. I will get my review posted up shortly.

Andrea Ahn | 408 comments I love Sarah Dessen! I'm hoping the book lives up to her other books, as the reviews haven't been as good and when I bought the book today it looks real short, so I'll be starting tomorrow...

Aly (alyp_01) | 11128 comments I liked it a lot!

Karen Barber | 13281 comments Up to ch8. I see what you mean when you say it’s a bit slow-paced at this point, but I think it’s very naturally presented. Definitely wondering about Emma and Roo.

Andrea Ahn | 408 comments Chapter 7 (view spoiler)

Aly (alyp_01) | 11128 comments I love Roo!

Andrea Ahn | 408 comments Chapter 12 (view spoiler)

Karen Barber | 13281 comments Up to ch13. The name thing is like a re-invention. Everyone needs a Roo-such a calming positive character.

Karen Barber | 13281 comments Up to ch18. Got a sinking feeling about this party. Don’t understand why her dad is being so awkward.

Karen Barber | 13281 comments Up to ch22. There’s a real sense of familiarity to this story, even though they’re new characters.

Karen Barber | 13281 comments Finished. Review on home page. Quite simple, but satisfying.

Andrea Ahn | 408 comments Chapter 18 (view spoiler)

yeah honestly in regards to what you said, (view spoiler)

Jaye Berry | 894 comments ALSO I'm not saying that emma/saylor mentioned something that sounded a lot like ocd and how it went away when she went to lake north and made friends but uh.... pretty sure she said that and was worried about it "coming back" when she left???

janel (liiterary) | 441 comments The family dynamics in this were actually pretty good, but there was just so much of it that I got a bit overwhelmed.

Exactly, plus when he was just there JUST to be an obstacle instead of an actual character lol. Sure she could have made up another reason they couldn't have gotten together sooner but ew I hated that.

Exactly! Exactly, I need to care about people and the only reason I cared about him was because he was being treated so shittily, but there was nothing else to him - real characters WHOMST
