I need to switch my planned books around a bit. New Cthulhu: The Recent Weird has turned out to be a r-e-a-l-l-y slow read, I'm about 25% done and not sure at all that I'll finish on Friday. I'll do another N book instead, Night School, and will finish Cthulhu next week (it's short stories, so lots of letters).

Ok, noted :-)

I've realized that I'm a bit of an idiot & To Night Owl from Dogfish doesn't actually work for N cause "to" is not an article (but maybe Night Owl is a nickname and it works because of that?)... but in better news on the letter front, The Miseducation of Cameron Post has an I character :-)
Oh you're reading that, too?
I haven't gotten very far yet - I had a busy weekend and then I was lazy yesterday and didn't get very far...
Cam seems a bit of an odd one.

Yup I am! I bought it nearly a year ago so about time I get to it... I'm 100 pages in and while I think it's well-written, I'm not really enjoying myself? Cam is definitely a bit strange.
I'm not even that far yet, but I'm also just floating along for now, wondering what Cam's deal is.
Guess we'll see once we get a bit further in?

Already...Are we short for any particular letters as I can read another book before the end of the week and don't have any planned?
Oh, it's still a few days to go, don't worry! :-)
Something with I / O would be good. Or maybe another N since we have quite a few of those.

Ah, cool cool! Then we're definitely starting to have enough vowels.
Though that also depends on how many books we're still going to read over the course of the week :-)

Cameron Post is such slow reading! I keep falling asleep over it on the bus in the mornings.
(Or maybe I'm just too tired to concentrate on a book haha.)
(Or maybe I'm just too tired to concentrate on a book haha.)
I knooooow 😅 still haven't made it past p. 120 but I hope to get some good reading in today - it's too hot to do anything else, anyway.
Eurgh, it is.... apparently we're going to go up to the mid 30s today (°C).
Definitely going to try and get a chunk read today as well. I'm still not past page 100... which is a little ridiculous haha.

We're supposed to get all the way up to 17 C today, with the occasional break between showers if we're lucky...Gotta love British summers. *sigh*

Sammy, I'll be coming over in July, so I'd appreciate you fixing the weather for me hee hee. A nice 24 c would be good and blue skies. I'll leave it with you, LOL.

24 sounds lovely. It may even be possible... but will likely come with plenty of rain, lol!
It also depends where you're going to be. The south gets far, far better weather than those of us in Yorkshire, lol.
Eldarwen wrote: "Honestly, I'd rather have the 17°c than the 37°c!!Though the showers are probably not so nice.."
You know, I wouldn't complain at the 17, as it's warm enough for a t-shirt at least, but we've had non-stop rain for almost a month now, and I'm sick to death of it, lol.

Sooooo I just had a looksie and it seems the Cameron Post audiobook is on Youtube.... that should definitely help me along 🙈

I've only read a couple of his, but have read everything of Cornwell's (except War of the Wolf which arrived only a couple of days ago. Can't wait to get stuck in!)
His best series is The Warlord chronicles, IMO. Great take on the Arthurian legends.
I hadn't read anything by Cornwell before starting The Saxon Stories. From Iggulden I've read both the Emperor and the Conqueror series, which were excellent, and Wars of the Roses, which wasn't quite as entertaining. His newest series, Empire of Salt, I didn't like, have read only the first one (he should stick with historical fiction and not mix fantasy into it).
It's the War of the roses I read. It's been a while though, pre joining GR, lol. Always hoped Cornwell would have a crack at that part of history, but he's too much other stuff still to write, lol.
Sammy wrote: "It's the War of the roses I read."If you have time, I recommend taking a look at the Emperor or Conqueror series, much better IMO. War of the Roses was a bit slow for me.
I have a couple of them, but they're later in the series. Waiting for them to show up in the charity shop, lol.
Sammy wrote: "His best series is The Warlord chronicles, IMO. Made a purchase requisition, hope they get it.
They also seem to have the Grail Quest series.

I enjoyed The Grail Quest very much too. Libraries are very strange things. I can never make heads nor tales from the books they do and don't have, lol.
It's not just libraries :)There is a reason I stopped reading croatian translations, besides that at one point they were really terrible. It's like publishers don't care if the book is part of the series. It's so fun when you discover new author and then you figure out that they translated only 9th book in series. :P

Right? It's so weird...
It also depends on the language being translated into.
Arnaldur Indridason was translated from book one onwards into German, but the English translations only exist starting at book 3... I mean..???

It tends to go the opposite way here... I'd bought Pogingen iets van het leven te maken: Het geheime dagboek van Hendrik Groen, 83¼ jaar in English translation a while ago, and spent for ever trying to get hold of a copy in Dutch, because as it was a comedy, I expected it to be funnier in its original language.Eventually my parents got someone in The Netherlands to post one out as a birthday present, at great expense. I'm quite sure it's only because they want to read it too when I'm done, lol.
But generally speaking, foreign language books tend to be limited to a handful of books you'd be expected to read when studying a language. (I read Momo for German, and The Three Musketeers as prep for my French exams in school)
Eldarwen wrote: "❀Tea❀ wrote: "It's not just libraries :)There is a reason I stopped reading croatian translations, besides that at one point they were really terrible. It's like publishers don't care if the book ..."
Thankfully, I have never encountered a translation that started out in the middle of the series, but it's quite common that only the first book gets translated and for someone who prefers to read all the books in the same language that can be pretty annoying...
Sometimes translations do pay off. For instance, Dan Brown's writing is way better in Estonian than in English😅

That’s good to know, an audio can really make or break a book. It seems like an interesting story, and I’m looking forward to listening to it.
