I don't remember much about the book, but I read it around 3-4ish years ago. It was about a girl, and her mother gets bitten by a snake. I remember there were two doctors in the town, and the one was away, so they had to go to the other doctor. He wouldn't treat her because he was white and she was African American. At another point in the novel, the doctor's daughter almost drowns, but the main character saves her. I also remember this doctor treated his wife and daughter badly, which is one of the reasons his daughter jumped into the water late at night knowing she couldn't swim. These are all the weird little details I remember, and any help is appreciated.
