SOLVED. Slightly wealthier black family is still poor but owns land. Set sometime when black people didn't have much rights. The children go to school with white children but are treated differently and are harassed by white neighbors. [s]

It's a book about a black family that lives the South during maybe the civil rights movement. There is a couple of young siblings and some of them start school. They go to a school with white children but have to use old worn out textbooks unlike the white children who use new ones. On the kids way to and from school they go walking and sometimes they don't wear shoes. They go along the side of the dirt road while the white children take the school bus. I can't remember much else other than a part where the family is at their house and during the night the hear and see a caravan of cars come down the road to the house. They are white people and come to threaten or scare the black family for some reason. Also I remember that this black family was wealthier than the other black families and had their own home and farm while the other black families lived and worked on the property of white families. I believe the white families were jealous of this black family because of that. That's about all I remember but I really want to find this book again because it's pretty interesting.

Sounds like the Logan Family series by Mildred D. Taylor. There is a novella that starts off the series, but the first main novel is "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry".
