Christy | 61 comments Do we have unlimited author guesses? If so, I'd like to guess Nora Roberts

Also I just did the Movie game

message 403: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments The team has 4 chances to guess the author, so I recommend the team come to a consensus on who to guess. :)

I like that Sarah. That will be our next question. I first want to ask:

Were most of our author's writings published in the 1900s?

message 405: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments Were most of our author's writings published in the 1900s? NO

Ok! So I'm thinking it is a contemporary author? Next question will be about books to movie.

Whoops, sorry everyone! Thanks for the information, Katie.

Edie | 1143 comments How about asking whether the author has a book on the list of 1001 books to read before you die? Depending on the answer to that we can look closely at the 1001 books (which is really more than 1001 books) or think about female, living American authors who don't have books on that list.

message 410: by Kathryn (last edited Jun 11, 2019 02:10PM) (new)

Kathryn | 563 comments Since it sounds like a few people are working on books with a child main character, I just went ahead and finished A Night Divided by Jennifer A. Nielsen as it can count for a book set over several years - the main character is 8 when it starts and 12 when it finishes.

And just for a plug - it was great! I listened to the audio, and it was almost heart-stopping at the end!

Good night everyone!

message 416: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments I did the movie adaptation game (or tried anyway).

I got my kid's book from the library, but struggling with a migraine today so reading a physical book long enough to finish is questionable tonight. I'll see how things are going later on, but it sounds like we have a few child books in progress already.

Just a heads up, I am now adding more buckets to each team. Please update spreadsheets accordingly :)

message 418: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11185 comments Mod
New buckets! The spreadsheet has been updated!

message 419: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments They're trying to stump us with some of these!

I did notice that you have A Woman is No Man for a couple possible categories. I just checked out The Lost Man from the library, so if we don't need it sooner than that and time allows, we could go for two titles with "Man" in them as a possiblity.

I also added the books on my June TBR stack that work for various categories. I can't commit to reading all of them of them before Sunday. :)

message 420: by Kathryn (last edited Jun 11, 2019 05:43PM) (new)

Kathryn | 563 comments Does anyone have any books with beautiful or interesting spines that they are working on? It's not a category that works so well for ebooks or audiobooks! I was just at the library returning some books and had a scan of the shelves to see if there was anything suitable that I might want to read. I didn't see any that I could truly call beautiful, although I did bring home The Little Bookshop on the Seine because it has an Eiffel Tower on the spine (and the Eiffel Tower is always beautiful!) and I also brought home Court of Lions because its spine is all gold, so that's a bit interesting. I can start either of those if no one else has anything in the works (and The Little Bookshop is probably a quicker read than the other one), but I'm equally happy to return them to the library unread if one or two others have the spine category covered.

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11185 comments Mod
Deborah, I can definitely plan to finish that one at the same time you're finishing The Lost Man. That was the only one that I was really concerned about!

message 422: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11185 comments Mod
Kathryn, I think there was only one person who mentioned spines earlier, so I would say go after that prompt!

message 425: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments Purely luck that I noticed my "Man" book on the new release shelf when I picked up my hold book today, but I'm glad I did!

Island authors is stumping me for ideas. I think that came up as a suggested prompt for last year's voting process, but I don't know if anyone knows of any island author lists to draw from?

message 426: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11185 comments Mod
I checked the archives, but the only time it's mentioned is in the suggestions thread, and there were no links. There's also nothing in the rejects folder about it.

It would probably be better to search specifically for authors from ____. Hawaii, Bora Bora, anywhere in the Caribbean...

If you want to get literal, any Australian author would count - we're the largest island, but we are still an island! And there's a lot of Aussie authors: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/3... (however I've read a lot of Australian authors, but only 13 out of the first 100 on this list!). The Aussie Readers group bookshelf could also be a good resource: https://www.goodreads.com/group/books...

New Zealand is also an island, as is the UK... And personally, if I was reading for this prompt, one of these countries is what I would go with!

EDIT: We had the same thought, Kathryn! I would definitely go Australian or UK.

message 429: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 563 comments As a plug for an Australian author, if you like a bit of romance with some suspense (and I'm not a huge romance fan, but I liked this one), I just finished Kakadu Sunset by Annie Seaton and I really enjoyed it - more than I thought I would!!

But all books on the Aussie Readers' group bookshelf (I don't think you need to join the group to see the bookshelf) should be Australian - I can recommend Liane Moriarty, Nicole Trope, Matthew Reilly, Michael Robotham, Tony Park, Kelly Rimmer... I could go on, but I won't!

I wasn't sure if Australia counted as an island - Google gave me mixed results on the question of continent vs. island, but that definitely opens up a lot of possibilities!

We are definitely an island, but we're also a continent. We're the only continent that is also an island - fun fact for the day!

And yes, I loved The Rosie Project when I read it - it made me laugh out loud!

Kathy E | 3313 comments I finished The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, which actually spans several years so we can use it for that.

Pages read today: 199

Nancy (nbaker) | 0 comments 6/11 read 235 pages and finished Wandfasted not sure if it fits any categories.

message 437: by Jill (new)

Jill | 725 comments I played the Movie Adaptation game.

I will finish The Proposal tonight so that will take care of a book that features a sport.
Another book that I could finish tomorrow night or whenever we need it is Searching for Sylvie Lee which contains an epilogue.

I finished Their Eyes Were Watching God (PRAISE I'M DONE), so we have the year spanning covered. I'm waiting for Jill to confirm that she finished The Proposal to count for the sports book and then we will be done with Bucket 9.

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11185 comments Mod
Oh great, thanks Jill!

The epilogue one is Bucket 11, so just check in and make sure we have the books with child protagonist and the celestial body book finished before you finish that one!

Deborah, it turns out that me and Kelly were both planning on reading How Not to Die Alone, so we will use that one for the book title with the same words in it... After thinking about it, I just don't think I can do a heavy book like A Woman Is No Man right now!

Ok gang, I'm heading to sleep soon. Here's where we stand, halfway through the Read-A-Thon.

We have read A TON of books (I haven't tracked those) for a total of 20,674 pages (reported as of this moment).

We have solved one author, and we are one Read-A-Thon game and one book away from getting to ask two more questions about our second author.

We are currently in second place (behind Ladybug, ahead of Bumblebee), but I know we can come back and take it!

Please make sure you are submitting your page count and keeping an eye on the prompts! It's really helpful when you tell us you have finished a book, even if you don't know if fits prompts, because we can usually figure it out.

People who are reading books with children narrators and/or celestial bodies, get ready to finish those tomorrow! We will be wrapping up our currently bucket tonight.

Great work, team! Y'all are killing this game!

message 445: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Morrison | 478 comments I finished True Crime Addict: How I Lost Myself in the Mysterious Disappearance of Maura Murray. It doesn’t fit for any of the categories, but it adds 304 pages.

message 446: by Jill (new)

Jill | 725 comments I just fished The Proposal!
I read 161 pages today.
Now I am going back to Searching for Sylvie Lee but will wait to read the epilogue until we are ready for it. Working from home tomorrow and I am currently about halfway through the book so I should be able to wrap it up as soon as it is needed.

message 447: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Brown | 371 comments Great job everyone! I have 76 pages for 6/11.

message 448: by Jill (new)

Jill | 725 comments I see on the spreadsheet that you don’t have me down as completing The Favorites game. It probably got lost in all the posts. I did complete that one yesterday. 😊

message 449: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments Wow, so much going on while I was sleeping! And new buckets!

I am off to work in a bit, where I can sneak in reading the rest of my child mc book. I am actually technically reading it for a book talk on thursday (I am children's and youth librarian) so I don't feel too guilty about that.

I am a 100 pages from finishing Killing Commendatore by Murakami, who is Japanese, and Japan is very much an island (well several, but Murakami must be from one of them).

message 450: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments Ha! I just figured, my next upcoming read is Færgen (the Ferry) by Mats Strandberg - a horror book about a ferry trip from Sweden to Finland - so they travel to another country!

Later I will strategise. Now I need to get my youngest off to school and go to work...
