Are we sure we want to guess yet? I think we only get 4 options at guessing and we still have quite a few of our 20 questions available to be asked...

message 202: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 563 comments I'm calling it quits for Sunday.

I've read 171 pages finishing off Nine Perfect Strangers, and 187 pages of Kakadu Sunset, but I still have 120ish pages to go and won't get to read much of it until later on Monday, so hopefully other people might finish off a nature-related book before I can finish this one.

Total pages read today = 358 pages

Jackie (heirloomroses) | 211 comments I did the Book Title Synonyms & Antonyms, but I couldn't figure out a few.

message 204: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Morrison | 478 comments I lied and am behind times. You can use The Magnolia Story as relating to nature if we want because Magnolia in the title.

Since y'all are rocking the challenge so far, the mods have decided to add more buckets. There are now 11 buckets to be completed. Happy strategizing!

i double checked the rules today to see if their was a limit to our guesses and didnt see that rule so I can delete the comment if the group wants.

New Rule:

- You will also receive a new author if you incorrectly guess the author 4 times.

Good morning folks! I've been catching up on everything, so the spreadsheet should be updated (including adding the new buckets!!).

It looks like we have one more book and a few more pages to read for Bucket 5! We currently have THREE questions we can ask!

Based on the discussion, I'm going to go with:

Did she die in the last 50 years (1969 - 2019)?
Did she write novels?

Once we get these answers, we can narrow it down further with a list or something?

Our next bucket has a book you discovered during the Read-A-Thon as one of the prompts. I know we could use a book any of us has completed (or one from one of the games), but I thought it would be fun if we each recommended a book... maybe one you read for ATY challange? That way, someone could pick one of these books and read them for their challenge as well?

I'll start!

My most recent favorite, which was a surprise for me, was Trail of Lightning for the indigenous prompt. I started and DNF'd There There (too heavy of a read for May), so I had to pick up something else, and Trail of Lightning was just so, so good that I ended up getting the sequel from the library as well!

Jill | 725 comments My book recommendation: I read Meet Me at the Museum for a book not written in a traditional format (it is epistolary) and loved it!

message 211: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments I just finished An Absolutely Remarkable Thing but it doesn't work for our current bucket. Are we covered for the nature books? I can have a rummage to see if I have anything that fits but it's my boyfriend's birthday tomorrow so I probably won't read much.

Did she write novels? Yes

message 214: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments The Thirteenth Tale was my choice for the book with a number in the title or on the cover and i really enjoyed it.

I read this last year and really liked it too.

message 218: by Tawallah (last edited Jun 09, 2019 09:22AM) (new)

Tawallah | 0 comments My progress for June 8- 445 pages
Finished 2 books- Sheepfarmer's Daughter and The Poisoner's Handbook: Murder and the Birth of Forensic Medicine in Jazz Age New York

Read 24 pages in A Feast for Crows
Read 44 pages in The Oxford Book of Caribbean Short Stories

Did all but one of synomyms and antonyms

message 219: by Jill (new)

Jill | 725 comments I finished the Antonym/Synonym game, except for antonym #6.

message 220: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 539 comments In case we need the page count to finish a bucket so far for June 9th I have read 107 pages of Appointment with Death

message 221: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (dg_reads) | 418 comments I'm starting Summer of the Mariposas which would work for nature if we don't have it checked off when I finish. Mariposas are butterflies and there is a butterfly on the cover, so it seemed a good pick for the team even if it only counts for pages! :)

Summer of the Mariposas by Guadalupe Garcia McCall

message 222: by Dina (new)

Dina | 236 comments I have completed the Book Reader questions and the Book Title Synonyms & Antonyms.

message 223: by Ira (new)

Ira | 358 comments Hi team, sorry for not checking in this weekend, but I had visitors and went to Bon Jovi concert. I have done the Kickoff, the book title synonyms and antonyms. I have read 400 pages ofAn Echo of Things to Come and 100 pages of American Gods

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11185 comments Mod
Sweet! Thanks for your updates!

Has anyone finished a book connected to nature in some way? We just need one more book to finish this bucket! We've already finished the page count for the next bucket as well, so let's get on those prompts.

We still have one question to ask... any suggestions? Here's what we know: We are looking for an American female novelist who has died in the last 50 years. Her last name starts with either S, X, Y, or Z.

message 225: by Brittany (new)

message 226: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 423 comments I finished Wool. The main point of it is the complete destruction of nature so that could count.

Someone earlier mentioned Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead which I put on hold at the library. Really hoping it comes available soon, but I'm sure someone else can find and finish a book before me.

message 227: by Kathy (new)

Kathy E | 3313 comments I have finished the book synonyms and antonyms

message 228: by Edie (new)

Edie | 1143 comments At this point, I would suggest asking if the last name begins with S. It is the most likely option... lots of S last names, but if we are going to look at lists of possible authors would be good to know whether we are looking for an author whose name begins with S. Is Anita Shreve (suggested some time ago) an option? or not?

message 229: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11185 comments Mod
She is an option... do we want to submit her as a formal guess? She died in 2018, wrote novels, fits the last name and country of origin component... We have four guesses, so I don't think it would be awful to use one of our guesses on her now.

message 230: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11185 comments Mod
Also, WE HAVE FINISHED BUCKET 5! Now we need two books published during the summer (June, July, or August publications) and one book that someone discovered through the Read-A-Thon.

Shelley mentioned that she can cover the discovered through prompt, but if anyone has already started a book that fits this task, please let me know! We will definitely hit our page count for this prompt by the end of the day.

message 231: by Kathy (new)

Kathy E | 3313 comments I'm listening to The Masterpiece which was published August 7, 2018. I still have 8 hrs, 48 min to go so someone may get a book done before me.

message 232: by Kath (new)

Kath (kathsreading) | 14 comments I finished The 7½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton - 285 pages

I also finished Uprooted by Naomi Novik - 212 pages

Total page count for June 9: 497 pages

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11185 comments Mod
Way to go, Alex! I've updated your page counts.

I think we will go ahead and submit our first formal guess:

Our author is Anita Shreve.

message 234: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments YOU GUYS ARE AMAZING. ANITA SHREVE IS YOUR AUTHOR.

WHOOP WHOOP! SHOUTOUT TO TRACY FOR KILLING THE GUESSING GAME!

(Do we get the badge for being first? Do we get to try for another author? I have so many questions but also CELEBRATING!)

message 236: by Jill (new)

Jill | 725 comments Yay Tracy and Team Butterfly!

message 237: by Edie (new)

Edie | 1143 comments Yeah, Team Butterfly! We rocked this. On to a new author?

message 238: by Edie (new)

Edie | 1143 comments The edition of The Silver Star I am reading was published in June. I'm 100 pages in with 160 pages to go. I will focus on this... getting a break since the Vandy baseball super regional game I was watching is on rain delay :)

message 239: by Bec (new)

Bec | 1337 comments Yay!! Great guessing!
I read 301 pages on 9 June.

message 240: by Katie (last edited Jun 09, 2019 03:04PM) (new)

Katie | 2360 comments Per the rules Laura posted, it is the combination of filling all the buckets & guessing the author first that lights the light bulb in your graphic & awards you the read-a-thon badge.

Laura wrote: "As you fill the initial flasks, the water will move down the line, in order to fill the large beaker below. You will fill small test tubes by earning questions (4 per tube).

Win the game by filling the large beaker and guessing the author name. This will light your team's lightbulb.

The team to light their bulb first will earn a special badge :)"

So you guys are halfway there, since you guessed your author. You just need to fill all of your buckets now.

We'll assign you a new author to work on to keep you motivated. I'm super impressed. Great work guys.

Thanks! I think the team would still work on the buckets and play the games, but the author to guess adds an element of fun to it.

We checked off half of it, team, but we gotta work hard to fill these buckets!

(It looks like we are tied with Bumblebee and ahead of Ladybug in terms of bucket filling, so let's keep on pace!)

message 242: by Christy (new)

Christy | 61 comments Well I read 15 pages of Storm of Locusts this afternoon, until I FOUND BED BUGS IN MY LIBRARY BOOK. I didn't know they were bed bugs, but I put the book in a plastic bag and took it back to the library only to get a terrible shock from the librarian telling me what it was. It's pretty clear the vector was the book, and I haven't found any signs (so far, fingers crossed) of an infestation, but my reading has been pretty derailed today. I've been boiling clothes and peering suspiciously at the undersides of couch cushions for hours, sigh.
All further reading for this read-a-thon will be done on a Kindle. I love the library. I feel so betrayed.
(sorry for the derail)

UGH CHRISTY THAT IS SO AWFUL.

(Ironic that the book was Storm of Locusts... plagues and infestations. Blegh.)

message 244: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments Oh Christy, that is so horrible. I'm so sorry!!!

message 245: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1567 comments YIKES! That is awful Christy, I hope that you stay in the clear of those nasty bugs. This is the first time I have ever heard of that happening. I generally only get ebooks from the library but there was a graphic novel I want to read for the challenge and am picking it up tomorrow :/. Will have to look at it carefully before I bring it home.

message 246: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Brown | 371 comments Oh my gosh Christy, that is one of my worst nightmares! I will keep my fingers crossed for you!

I have finished Recursion, which will count as a book published in June, July, or August as it was just released in June. It will also add 64 pages to my total.

On to find the next read. I will update either later tonight or tomorrow morning with more pages read.

Way to go on the author guess too!

message 247: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1567 comments OH forgot my update. I read 65 pages of Buried before bed last night and listened to 59 pages of Evelyn Hugo today. To a total of 124. I will read more later but not sure I will get a chance to post again today.

message 248: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
That is absolutely horrible Christy! I use library books excessively so I will probably also be peering at mine for a while now!!

message 249: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments YAY! I can't believe we guessed our author already. Well done everyone!

Urgh to the bed bugs :(

I only read a measly 65 pages today.

message 250: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Ugh Christy... just ...UGH!!!!! I would die, then shower then die again.

Glad I could rock the author guess :-) I dont think I'll be getting much reading done for the next few days so at least I feel like I contributed something.
