Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo is the story of Alina Starkov and the training she undergoes to control her ability to manipulate light. Upon accidentally discovering her ability with a near-death encounter with the volcra, a race of monsters that inhabit a void known as the shadow fold, Alina gains the attention of the Darkling, leader of the grisha (essentially wizards). The darkling then takes her under his wing and, realizing the danger she will be in when the neighboring countries discover her abilities, personally escorts her to the little palace, the training grounds of all the grisha. As the war in the country of Ravka gets worse and the Shadow fold makes it impossible to unite the divided halves of it, Alina must learn to call upon her power as she prepares to take on and ultimately end the shadow fold.
I really enjoyed this book and its sequels. Leigh Bardugo is incredibly good at world and character building. The pacing of the story is done well, describing new towns or characters without slowing to a crawl, and Alina, her friend Mal, and the Darkling are all interesting characters to read about. There are also several plot twists that are performed so well that they are challenging to predict before they happen, making the story that much more interesting to read. All in all, this was a really well written book with a good story and I do recommend it to anyone who likes a good fantasy novel.
