It wouldn't be a read-a-thon without a good team challenge and we have another brand new one to bring to you this time around!

We've heard your requests to have info before you decide to sign up and to allow everyone to strategize. Of course, discussions are some of the best parts about the event. So read through the game details, before heading on over here to sign up.

In this game, you will work together as a team to "fill" buckets with water. Each time your team fills a bucket, you will earn the ability to ask a question, in order to guess a mystery author. Think "Chain Reaction" meets "20 Questions".

Bucket 1:
- Read 1,000 pages total
- A book by a woman
- A book that starts with S

Bucket 2:
- Read 3,000 pages total
- 2 books set on different continents
- 2 books published in different decades

Bucket 3:
- Read 5,000 pages total
- 2 books in different formats (eg an audiobook and a kindle book, etc)
- 2 books published in 2019

Bucket 4:
- Read 7,500 pages total
- 3 books that count for the AtY challenge
- 3 books by authors that are new to you

Bucket 5:
- Read 9,000 pages total
- 2 books related to nature (i.e. cover setting, title, etc.)
- A book where main character's name begins with J, U, N, or E

Bucket 6:
- Read 11,000 pages total
- 2 books originally published in the summer (June, July, or August
- A book discovered during the read-a-thon (in the group or elsewhere)

Bucket 7:
- Read 12,500 pages total
- 2 books inspired by a "quirky" summer holiday (June, July, or August)*
- To celebrate PRIDE month, A book with an LGBTQ+ character or author

Bucket 8:
- Read 15,000 pages total
- A book on page 6 of your TBR (sorted by date added, oldest-newest)
- Read the rainbow (a book with a cover for each color - red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple)

Challenge Rules
- Your team must complete buckets in order (i.e. the first bucket must be filled before you can fill Bucket 2)
- You will earn one question every time you fill a bucket. You also earn one guess for every 10 read-a-thon games completed by your team members. Note: 10 members can complete the same game.
- If you have not guessed the author after 20 questions then you will receive a new author.
- You will also receive a new author if you incorrectly guess the author 4 times.
----------------------------------------------------------
- All genres and formats (including childrens’ books, graphic novels, audiobooks etc) are fine but books must be at least 100 pages long to count.
- Books started before the read-a-thon can be counted as long as you read at least 100 pages of the book and complete it during the read-a-thon.
- If you want to read books shorter than 100 pages, like picture books or graphic novels, you must read 3 of them before counting them for the prompt.

Yes, there will be a graphic to accompany the game, for those who enjoy the visuals. It will be posted before start of the event.

* This is open to interpretation so can be pulled from any reasonable source. Some suggestions can be found here: https://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/...

When you figure it out, let me know! This is so cool!

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments Just to clarify the reading in bucket order thing: Will it be okay to read a book that fits bucket 8 for instance, before we reach that bucket, but wait to "release" the bucket till we get there?

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11184 comments Mod
My understanding is that the dates finished need to be in order... so even if I read an LGBTQ+ book this Saturday, I can't use it for our bucket because the team hasn't completed buckets 1-6 yet.

I could be wrong though!

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11184 comments Mod
Oh! I have another question about the page totals.

If we read 5,000 pages but we haven't finished bucket 1 yet, can those pages still count for buckets two and three? Or does the page count start over when we finish the previous bucket?

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11184 comments Mod
Annnnnd another question. For the books that count for the ATY challenge, is that only the 52 prompt challenge, or would the summer reading challenge count as well (even if it's not for ATY main challenge)?

Jillian | 2875 comments Johanne wrote: "Just to clarify the reading in bucket order thing: Will it be okay to read a book that fits bucket 8 for instance, before we reach that bucket, but wait to "release" the bucket till we get there?"

I hope that is how it works. That way everyone can contribute and have their books count.

But on the flip side, we would end up completing this challenge really quickly... all of the books read will count towards page count, which is a requirement to fill the buckets... it would just be some people dedicating one or two of their books towards the prompts.

Last Read-A-Thon, my team read 81 books... this Read-A-thon only allows for 32 books to fill the prompts. If we are forced to go in order, everyone's book will count towards page number goals, but we will need to be strategic on who reads what, when, to make sure the buckets are filled properly in order. If we are allowed to read books to fill buckets as we want, then this Read-A-Thon would be over by the first weekend.

Here's what I've put together for the spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

The total pages read should calculate automatically, so members would just need to input their pages read each day, the names of the games they participate in, and replace the prompt with the book title for the ones they complete.

Pleaseeeeeee let me know if you have suggestions on how to improve it!

message 11: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments How do you guys count pages for audio? If that's OK to use toward the page counts?

message 12: by Katie (last edited Jun 06, 2019 07:00AM) (new)

Katie | 2360 comments Emily's interpretation is correct. You need to finish the books in order of the buckets. You guys are such read-a-thon rock stars, that we want to add more of a challenge element to the game this time. You'll need to coordinate and be strategic about when books need to be completed. You can also read part of the book early in the read-a-thon, and then wait to finish it until your team gets to that bucket.

The page number goals for each bucket will stack from bucket to bucket. So your pages will always count to the group total goal of 15,000 pages for bucket 8.

For Bucket 4, the books read would need to count toward the main ATY 52 book challenge.

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11184 comments Mod
Also, Ellie had a good question about how to count audiobooks towards page count!

message 14: by Katie (last edited Jun 06, 2019 06:54AM) (new)

Katie | 2360 comments Ellie, I am almost strictly audiobooks, and I just count the number of pages from the physical copy when I finish the audio. You can break it down like, I listened to half of the audiobook, so for a 200 page book, that would be 100 pages, if you want to count the page numbers before you finish the audiobook.

message 15: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments Emily, I've updated message 12 to address your question about the ATY challenge reads.

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11184 comments Mod
Perfect, thanks! So the spreadsheet is ready to go, unless you all see something I missed.

message 17: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2875 comments I guess then people can just wait to read the last page/chapter. It won’t bother me since I have several books going at once but for people who only read one book at s time it may be harder.

message 18: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2875 comments I really appreciate you all posting the challenge early.

message 19: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11184 comments Mod
The good thing is that not everyone has to read to fill the prompt... so if I know I'm going to tackle the LGBTQ+ prompt, I may wait until Tuesday to start that one, and just read filler stuff until then. I think it can be managed, but it will take the group's efforts!

message 20: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments cool, thanks for clarifying. It will take more strategic planning, but I agree we are up fot it.

message 21: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
Now that there's clarity with the order of the buckets, do people think it will still be challenging enough? I can easily change the number of books for some prompts or even add more buckets if people think they need more challenge.

message 22: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11184 comments Mod
My only suggestion would be to maybe up the number of games people play to get a question.... If we have 10 people on a team, we could get two questions on the first day. Maybe upping it to 10 games instead of 5?

Thank you Emily! I've added a planning tab for my team, but this helps a lot.

message 29: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1267 comments Mods, can I get a clarification? In the rules it says:
You also earn one guess for every 10 read-a-thon games completed by your team members. Note: 10 members can complete the same game.

For the note, there are more than 10 members per team. If all 20 members complete the first game, is that good for 1 question (for each game only 10 members count) or 2 questions (all members count for all games)?

Thanks!

message 30: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments Traci, that would be 2 questions. You can also use a combination of games, like if 5 members complete today's kickoff & 5 complete tomorrow's game, that would count toward one question.

message 31: by Traci (new)

Great, thanks for the clarification!

For the questions we ask, do they have to be yes or no questions? I know when I've played 20 questions, they had to be yes or no.

For example:

"Is it a male or female?" would be a no-go, but "Is it a female?" would be ok.

message 38: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2875 comments Our team was wondering if an Arc planned to be published this month would count for published in 2019.

Katie | 2360 comments Marta, you can use #6.

Jillian, that would be just fine.

message 40: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments Can we count the synonym/antonym game if someone has only guessed some of the titles or does it need to be complete?

message 41: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments As long as you participate by posting on the topic, you're good! Not everyone is good at these kind of games (I'm personally rubbish and never participate haha).

message 42: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11184 comments Mod
For the TBR, does it matter how many books we show per page? The options are pretty vast (I think 10, 25, 30, 50, 75, 100, 500..)

message 43: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
I was thinking you would stick with the automatic. But since it's not specifically stated I supposed that would be a work-around to find a book you want ;)

Raquel (Silver Valkyrie Reads) Laura wrote: "I was thinking you would stick with the automatic. But since it's not specifically stated I supposed that would be a work-around to find a book you want ;)"

Mine is set to infinite scroll, but it adds more every 30 books, so I assumed that was the default? I really have no idea what it was originally set to if it wasn't infinite scroll.

message 45: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11184 comments Mod
Oh yea mine is set to infinite scroll too, but I didn't realize it added 30 each time. That makes sense.

message 46: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
I definitely didn't even know there was such a thing as infinite scroll...

But yes, the default is 30.

message 47: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1267 comments Mods - For author from an island, do they have to have been born there or if they live there does it count?

We have an author who was born in the US but lives in the UK.

message 48: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments "From" is kind of an ambiguous. I wouldn't say living there automatically makes them from there, but whether they identify as being from that country.

For example, my favorite hockey player was born in the US while his Canadian father was playing hockey in the US, but he grew up in Canada & identifies as Canadian.
