Terry Pearce So, the Open Pick for October will be The Orphan Master's Son by Adam Johnson.

As a Pulitzer winner in 2013 and a well-reviewed and advertised book, it probably needs little introduction, but the Pulitzer panel called it 'an exquisitely crafted novel that carries the reader on an adventuresome journey into the depths of totalitarian North Korea and into the most intimate spaces of the human heart'.

The Moderator Pick is Out Stealing Horses by Per Petterson.

An IMPAC winner and Independent Foreign Fiction Prize winner, the Guardian called it 'a minor masterpiece of death and delusion'. NYT said: 'This short yet spacious and powerful book [reminds] us of the careful and apropos writing of J. M. Coetzee, W. G. Sebald and Uwe Timm'.

We hope you'll join us for both.

Don't believe I would have thought of comparison with Coetzee and I don't know the work of the other two authors. Look forward to what the discussion will explore. It is a taut little book well worth re-visiting. (My last read was with a f2f group in 2009.)

Lily (joy1) | 2506 comments This from the description of Sebald is certainly applicable:

"His works are largely concerned with the themes of memory and loss of memory (both personal and collective) and decay (of civilizations, traditions or physical objects). They are, in particular, attempts to reconcile himself with, and deal in literary terms with, the trauma of the Second World War and its effect...."

Lily (joy1) | 2506 comments Goodreads has little on Uwe Timm except his publications. His Wiki entry didn't particularly help me understand the NYT allusion.

Cactus Wren | 45 comments Look forward to rereading this. It's like some tiny peppers - it packs a slow but powerful punch.

Pip | 102 comments I have to try and find this in paperback. It sounds like the Kindle version will just not do.
