Currently reading Jerusalem and it is very interesting but sweet mother of all that is holy is this a thick book. More words than War and Peace. I hit a third of the way through and have since read There There which was fantastic and The Book Thief - working through I Am Malala: The Story of the Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban and then I think I'll return to Part 2 of Jerusalem!

i’ve been reading ‘this life or the next’ and ‘hana khan carries on’ simultaneously — completely opposite worlds but equally interesting although Demian Vitanza is incomparable!

I'm in a yearslong project of reading all of Ursula LeGuin. Right now I'm reading her 2003 short story collection "Changing Planes." The "planes" of course are metaphysical. In each story she visits a different "plane" and presents a fictitious ethnology of the people who live there. The stories are not all equally strong, but the best ones are funny and insightful.

I am still debating whether to read Watchman, I'm concerned the books are more like the film than the series.

I just finished an Ursula LeGuin book--part of my yearslong project to read her entire body of work. "Changing Planes" is a collection of interconnected short stories. The "planes" are literal airplanes but also, of course, because it's Ursula LeGuin, metaphysical planes. The narrator visits different "planes" of existence and tells us anecdotes about them. The stories are basically ethnologies of fictitious cultures, which are entertaining in themselves and also usually make a subtle commentary on our own culture.

Hi, I just now joined! Look forward to sharing about books with all you book readers! I love reading books.
I started reading again last year at the beginning of the pandemic and have been reading pretty much non-stop. It's rather amazing that I am finally getting to read so fervently as there were about 65 previous years when reading was out of reach, although I wanted to and tried. Long story short, I had a focusing issue of some kind, but I went through a long period of trying to find the right medical cocktail (20+ years!!) for a variety of mental health maladies, including disabling anxiety and depression and obsessive rumination I could not control. I finally found one that produced amazing results, which resulted in my head 'clearing' in ways I didn't realize was unclear. So, yea, very thankful to be reading and just want to talk about it and hear others talk about theirs.
In any event, having just finished (finally) Infinite Jest, I'm about 1/3 through Flags in the Dust by William Faulkner. I love Faulkner. (I'm reading the classics or Great Books to catch up!). But Flags in the Dust is Faulkner's 3rd book, which was shortened, to his disappointment, to Sartoris, upon publication. Flags in the Dust is his original work.
One of the reasons I started with this is that, besides the fact that Faulkner's writing sometimes mesmerizes me with its rhythm and beauty, it's the first one in a series of novels based in his fictionalized County, Yoknapatawpha County. That County is coterminus with Lafayette County in North Western Mississippi. I'm from Memphis and not far from Oxford in Lafayette, the home of Ole Miss as well as Faulkner himself. But Lafayette County, I have learned through genealogical research, is the spot my US ancestors migrated to in the great migration west in the early to mid-1800s. So I have a few connections with this book and am enjoying it.
Anyone else a Faulkner fan?
Steve
Stephen, Nice of you to join us. Sorry to say I’m a serious NON Faulkner fan, but I did want to say “Hi!”. I read too much of it in college. Swore never again and my TBR list is a mile long. Enjoy though 👍

I'm reading Le Fantôme de l'Opéra. The tone of the novel is very different from what most people think about this famous story. Quite a good book.
