...apparently they're all working with reduced staff..."
I would think many libraries would have staffing problems. At libraries I am most familiar with at least half the staff would be considered "vulnerable" and over half the librarians "vulnerable."

I've heard some libraries are planning to have cleaning crew and some staff come in for at least a week to 10 days before library opens to public in order to get ready to open. Some may unlock/uncover returns during this time and some may do curbside delivery of holds in order to get those out of the way before opening.

Local library book drops can't be locked but are covered and "no returns" signs are posted. Last time I checked they were still covered but if past is any indication they may have been uncovered and covered again.

Covered the book drop but people have torn them open to drop in books. So we don't even bother.

Libraries closed through May 3.
Monday May 4: Materials may be returned at outside book drops and curbside pickup of holds will be available. Returned material will be held for 72 hours before being available for checkout. Returned items will remain on accounts during that time, but be cleared afterwards for the actual date of return.
No late fees will accrue until May 25 including ILL loans. No new ILL requests can be placed at this time.
Suspended through July 31: In-person library programs, outreach, public meeting room use, volunteer opportunities including Friends of the Library and book donations.
ETA: Pioneer Library System central Oklahoma posted they are discussing and decision will be posted. With few exceptions events for May are not showing as cancelled. Our local Friends group cancelled May book sale and there are a couple of other things cancelled but most events, including Friends books sales at other libraries are still are not showing as cancelled.

MUST. RETURN. BOOK. ON DUE DATE.

We're instructed to observe physical distancing and wait our turn if others are also picking up in that time slot (or near it). And there are posted warnings that if people consistently do NOT observe physical distancing they will end curb-side pick-up.

That sounds like a good system.
I've talked to the Friends volunteers I usually work with and none of us are planning to go into library building. We're seventyish or older.
While the system is limiting the number of people (public?) allowed inside building at a time they are requesting, not requiring masks be worn. They are providing access so public can use "essential library services" such as public use computers, copiers, and so on. Of course people can check out physical items such as books and movies.
The libraries are "following recommendations from city leaders" but I'd rather they follow recommendations from medical experts.
ETA: Library open regular hours. On days they are open over nine hours they temporarily close after eight hours for cleaning and staff change then re-open. My friends and I who are older don't plan to go to the library and have now cancelled all the holds we had on physical books.
As near I can tell our system is the only one in Oklahoma with buildings open to the public. Others I've checked that are open are doing curbside not letting public into the building.

Summer Romance Book Club
June book

July and August books are both contemporary western cowboy romances and each is book one in a series of cowboy/rodeo romances - at least they are available as audio

We are still not fully opening but are allowing people to read the newspapers and are having more seating available. Our study rooms will still be closed.

We are going to go back to our regular library schedule in June except we will be closed on Sundays. We will resume those in the Fall.

Great idea, you could change out the books and that would be great in the teen area and childrens!

For years some of us who are older library friends have campaigned to recruit younger volunteers. Kept telling them they could do it without us but it didn't happen until one after another, active older volunteers stepped away and stuck to it. Don't know why some quit but some us quit due to health risks.
Anyone else seeing this happening?

We just resumed our library book sale after a couple of years off. Most of our volunteers are older but dedicated. However, we have stopped collecting donations since we have so many books already by taking away the donation box but those sneaky patrons keep putting them in the library drop box. They then usually end up on the free shelf.

Our library doesn't have book sales anymore but our Rotary Club book sale started last week. It runs for a month so usually you can keep bringing donations after it starts. Usually there are no Rotarians there to monitor the sale, just a drop box for the money and on the honor system. I went with three plastic grocery bags, one was fairly large, and when I arrived there were several signs that said due to the overwhelming amount of donations they were no longer accepting donations. I sat my bags inside the door. No way was I taking them back home!!

People keep dropping books in our book drop for a book sale, which we won't be having for a long time. There is NO WHERE to put them and we just toss them. We keep telling people that we can't take them, but they just drop them anyway. And a large portion of them are so bad they should have thrown them out themselves.

How sad to have to throw books away. The book sale I was referring to had a lot of books but most were old. I mean at least 20 or more years old. Too bad they might be refusing some good newer books because the old musty ones are taking up the space.

Unfortunately it isn't just Texas.
It does not make me happy to see restrictive policies of the past returning.

"Dog's got to bark, a mule's got to bray.
Soldiers must fight and preachers must pray.
And children, I guess, must get their own way
The minute that you say no.
Why did the kids pour jam on the cat?
Raspberry jam all over the cat?
Why would the kids do something like that?
They did it 'cause we said NO.
My son was once afraid to swim
The water made him wince
Until I said, 'You mustn't swim!'
's been swimmin' ever since!
Ohhhhh......
Why did the kids put beans in their ear?
No one can hear with beans in their ears!
After a while the reason appears
They did it 'cause we said NO.
Your daughter brings a young man home
Says 'Do you like him , Pa?'
Just tell her he's a fool and then...
You've got a son-in-law!
Ohhhhhh....
Sure as the June comes right after May!
Sure as the night comes right after day!
You can be sure the devil's to pay
The minute that you say no.
Make sure you never say...
No! "

Texas seems to have a number of people who don't like books that give information on different life styles that exist. What someone considers "porn" is just information about people different from them. The "excuse" that they are protecting children from inappropriate books is nonsense. A Library is for EVERYONE, not just you. You don't like a book, don't read it, don't take it out, and if your children want to know why explain it to them with your perspective. The list that the 'Representative' gave is his way of taking that information out of circulation because HE doesn't like them. TOUGH!

That's the position the librarians, especially (I hear) the school librarians are taking. I hope they prevail!

That's disturbing.
If they were establishing specialized subscription libraries it would be one thing but taking over public libraries is decidedly disturbing.

Well you had a back up in case the first didn't work, and then a back up for the back up. Makes sense to me. *-*

I have a stack of 12 books ready to go BACK to the library (currently the drop off boxes are locked). And had 8 holds "in transit" when they closed abruptly on March 14. So, I'm hoping I'll have books to pick up when they re-open.
I did hear that "between library transfers" might not be happening ... apparently they're all working with reduced staff, so there may not be anyone available to handle that traffic. I'll have to check my own branch to see if any of the books I want are available. Probably not, as I seem to get 95% of my library books transferred in from other branches in the system.
.... Well ... I did just check. Of the seven titles I researched my local branch had only ONE of the titles in its collection. S*I*G*H
I'm willing to drive all over the county to various branches to pick up my books ... if they'll allow that.
