I'm overall satisfied with the ending. I like that Tate came back and got her published, that they ended up together, that Jodie came back and told her the truth about their mom, and how the town came to accept her eventually. If I were on the jury, I would have found Kya not guilty as well! But to find out she did it all along, and kept it secret even from Tate all those years, was a great twist!

Yes, I liked that Kya was able to get away with murder because Chase was a bad guy that was going to keep abusing her. I genuinely thought she was innocent, but low key loved that she was able to be this strong woman and defend herself from a predator.

How her and Tate end up together was really sweet too, despite all the other messed up stuff that happened to her. She deserved a happy ending (hide spoiler)]

First quarter - (view spoiler)[I loved the descriptions of the swamp, and how it held both life and death, light and dark. It gave me an inkling that the whole book was going to be like that as well.

Little Kya makes me feel so sad! Her mother left, her brother left after her dad was abusive to him, and she was bullied during her brief stint at school. (hide spoiler)]

Second quarter - (view spoiler)[Kya continued to have a rough time of it as she was still starving and lonely. The feather game was very odd but intriguing. It provides her with both some necessities and a friend. It was horrifically sad to learn that Tate believed her isolated position would disallow her to ever be a part of society. (hide spoiler)]

Third quarter - (view spoiler)[Distrust was forming around Kya and, through outside perspective and the split-chronology, we see it was merely fear of the other rather than any guilt on her part. I wished she could have been happy with Tate and that Chase was never in the picture. I'm glad she eventually learned the truth about him and Pearl, even if it hurt her. (hide spoiler)]

Fourth quarter - (view spoiler)[Almost every single chapter featured some scene of unfairness involving Kya, whether that be attempted rape, false accusation, or mistreatment. This whole book had been a frustrating read as there was little purity, kindness, or love in Kya's life. Not even Tate was a wholly good influence at first and the murder trial made me feel sadness, fear, and anger on her behalf. I hoped this was going to deliver a happy ending but wasn't actually expecting it. I was glad she was acquitted, even if not everyone in attendance was as glad with the result. I was shocked to find she actually was the culprit, right at the end. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[ So far I've enjoyed reading the book, but unfortunately haven't had that much time to read. It took me a while to get into the story, probably because I was only able to read a chapter or two in one sitting.

I like Kya and I feel sorry for her being abandoned by everyone. However, she manages to grow up and make a life for herself, living in the marsh that she loves. Although the story is undoubtedly sad, the foremost feelings I get from it are those of lightness and happiness. I guess the way Kya always picks herself up, makes me feel like the good things overpower the bad ones.
I am disappointed in Tate, but try to remember he was also barely an adult. And in a way, I like how the characters have their strengths and weaknesses. In the end, they're all just people trying to live their lives, but sometimes life gets in the way. I don't think Kya's parents were bad parents. They were just trying to battle their own demons and didn't have the strength to take care of their children.
Anyway, I'm excited to see what part 2 will bring.
