Read this as a child, in the mid 90's I believe. Basic plot is the world is out of resources/land, possibly polluted so when an area has been deemed habitable the whole world has the chance at winning the territory.

I believe the nations each had a team, of 3 members from what I remember. Main story followed 1 male character but his teamates were another boy and girl. The main character had a strong desire/goal of living on an island with his teammates.

One item that may further narrow it down, the 'battles' were simulations, maybe like electronic Chess/Risk and thier fingertips would actually got burned or blistered from manipulating the game areas for extended time.

Is the book Virtual War by Gloria Skurzynski? The main boy is Corgan and he is able to bring his hands very very close to things without touching. His two teammates are a codebreaker and and strategist, all of who are genetically altered.
