Sandra wrote: "I read it 25 years ago and I do not remember much, but I'm already in love again."Great you are enjoying the re-read, Sandra. That one wasn’t for me, unfortunately, but lovely that it is for you. I’m curious - dis you read it in Spanish or English the first time around and what about this time?
Sandra wrote: "Both times in Spanish. I had to look the fist line up in English to post it in here."Got it, I might give it another try someday - read it ages ago and I think still have it somewhere...
Magical realism needs to get you in the right frame of mind, I think. I tried Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie 7 or 8 years ago and couldn't pass the first 50 pages. The other day I was remembering it and thought I am ready to give it another try. Who knows?

I was definitely not into magical realism years ago - I can tolerate some now - I think I’m mellowing :-) funny, you mention Salman Rushdie - his books don’t speak to me either, although many folks love his writing, including those who share similar taste in books as me. Go figure...

I'm starting A Closed and Common Orbit, the second book in the Wayfarers series."Lovelace had been in a body for twenty-eight minutes, and it still felt every bit as wrong as it had the second she woke up inside it."
Kristie wrote: "Mine is:"Malibu catches fire. It is simply what Malibu does from time to time.""
I like it! Sounds promising!
I'm starting Fence: Striking Distance by Sarah Rees Brennan."Hey Ermie, I'm sorry I haven't written in a while. Every time I start an email, a kid runs into my office with an emotional crisis and a sword."
I was going to start Child 44 last night, but didn't except for the first paragraph. Here is the first line."Since Maria had decided to die her cat would have to fend for itself."
I'm starting The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan."The end of the world started when a pegasus landed on the hood of my car."
P.S. I read 'pegasus' as 'penguin' the first time I read the sentence.
Janice wrote: "Either way, a pegasus or penguin alighting on the hood of your car would be an eye opener."😂😂 It would certainly get my attention!
Danny wrote: "What If It's Us"I'm not a New Yorker, and I want to go.home.""
Hmmm, not a 5 star first line but I'd read on! Thanks for resurrecting this thread Danny, it's one of my favourites.
"The only thing we know for sure is that we will all die one day."The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning: How to Free Yourself and Your Family from a Lifetime of Clutter
It's nice to see this thread unearthed. "To say that I met Nicholas Brisbane over my husband's dead body is not entirely accuratel" Edward, it should be noted, was still twitching on the floor." - Silent in the Grave

They don't seem to be a happy bunch, do they?

ROFL!
He wakes to the sound of sirens.Did You Ever Have a Family
edited to add ~
I did not enjoy this book AT all. I lost track of the number of narrators at five, and while I knew what happened, I couldn't follow the actual story. I'm sad, because this could have been a really good book.
The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No HorseThe grass was white with frost on the shadowed sides of the reservation hills and ditches, but the morning air was almost warm.

I'm struggling with that issue on Call the Canaries Home. There are 4 sisters and a grandmother.
I know we haven't used this thread in a long time, but I had to add the first line of the book I just started because it caught me off guard and made me laugh. "Danny emitted a girlish squeal as Esther’s hand grasped his left buttock."
"All this happened, more or less.Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
Probably well known, but I loved it.
"When the student of medicine, Richard Bracquemont, decided to move into room #7 of the small Hotel Stevens, Rue Alfred Stevens (Paris 6), three persons had already hanged themselves from the cross-bar of the window in that room on three successive Fridays."The Spider by Ewers Hanns Heinz

It took me so many times reading that book before I could keep all the characters straight!
