Great you are enjoying the re-read, Sandra. That one wasn’t for me, unfortunately, but lovely that it is for you. I’m curious - dis you read it in Spanish or English the first time around and what about this time?

Got it, I might give it another try someday - read it ages ago and I think still have it somewhere...

Great point, Sandra. I was definitely not into magical realism years ago - I can tolerate some now - I think I’m mellowing :-) funny, you mention Salman Rushdie - his books don’t speak to me either, although many folks love his writing, including those who share similar taste in books as me. Go figure...

Certainly not for everyone.

"Lovelace had been in a body for twenty-eight minutes, and it still felt every bit as wrong as it had the second she woke up inside it."

"Malibu catches fire. It is simply what Malibu does from time to time.""
I like it! Sounds promising!

"Hey Ermie, I'm sorry I haven't written in a while. Every time I start an email, a kid runs into my office with an emotional crisis and a sword."

"Since Maria had decided to die her cat would have to fend for itself."

"The end of the world started when a pegasus landed on the hood of my car."
P.S. I read 'pegasus' as 'penguin' the first time I read the sentence.

😂😂 It would certainly get my attention!

"I'm not a New Yorker, and I want to go.home.""
Hmmm, not a 5 star first line but I'd read on! Thanks for resurrecting this thread Danny, it's one of my favourites.

The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning: How to Free Yourself and Your Family from a Lifetime of Clutter

"To say that I met Nicholas Brisbane over my husband's dead body is not entirely accuratel" Edward, it should be noted, was still twitching on the floor." - Silent in the Grave

ROFL!

Did You Ever Have a Family
edited to add ~
I did not enjoy this book AT all. I lost track of the number of narrators at five, and while I knew what happened, I couldn't follow the actual story. I'm sad, because this could have been a really good book.

The grass was white with frost on the shadowed sides of the reservation hills and ditches, but the morning air was almost warm.

I'm struggling with that issue on Call the Canaries Home. There are 4 sisters and a grandmother.

"Danny emitted a girlish squeal as Esther’s hand grasped his left buttock."

Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
Probably well known, but I loved it.

It took me so many times reading that book before I could keep all the characters straight!
