Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Oh, I remember that line so well, Sandra!
It took me so many times reading that book before I could keep all the characters straight!

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I read it 25 years ago and I do not remember much, but I'm already in love again.

Great you are enjoying the re-read, Sandra. That one wasn’t for me, unfortunately, but lovely that it is for you. I’m curious - dis you read it in Spanish or English the first time around and what about this time?

message 204: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Both times in Spanish. I had to look the fist line up in English to post it in here.

Got it, I might give it another try someday - read it ages ago and I think still have it somewhere...

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Magical realism needs to get you in the right frame of mind, I think. I tried Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie 7 or 8 years ago and couldn't pass the first 50 pages. The other day I was remembering it and thought I am ready to give it another try. Who knows?

Great point, Sandra. I was definitely not into magical realism years ago - I can tolerate some now - I think I’m mellowing :-) funny, you mention Salman Rushdie - his books don’t speak to me either, although many folks love his writing, including those who share similar taste in books as me. Go figure...

Certainly not for everyone.

message 215: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I was going to start Child 44 last night, but didn't except for the first paragraph. Here is the first line.

"Since Maria had decided to die her cat would have to fend for itself."

message 216: by Abby (new)

Abby | 270 comments I'm starting The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan.

"The end of the world started when a pegasus landed on the hood of my car."

P.S. I read 'pegasus' as 'penguin' the first time I read the sentence.

message 217: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments Either way, a pegasus or penguin alighting on the hood of your car would be an eye opener.

Hmmm, not a 5 star first line but I'd read on! Thanks for resurrecting this thread Danny, it's one of my favourites.

Did You Ever Have a Family

edited to add ~
I did not enjoy this book AT all. I lost track of the number of narrators at five, and while I knew what happened, I couldn't follow the actual story. I'm sad, because this could have been a really good book.

I'm struggling with that issue on Call the Canaries Home. There are 4 sisters and a grandmother.

Kristie | 19137 comments I know we haven't used this thread in a long time, but I had to add the first line of the book I just started because it caught me off guard and made me laugh.

"Danny emitted a girlish squeal as Esther’s hand grasped his left buttock."
