Kate | 2 comments It's by an acclaimed woman author. The central character is never named. First person narrative. She's totally alone in France (Paris?) with just enough money to stay in a decent place. It's implied that she's had an abortion or miscarriage and is kind of in hiding. She drinks Pernod or vermouth routinely. She meets other ex-patriates kind of randomly and occasionally has a drink with a man. She's very alone and sad.

The one happy episode is when she goes to an artist's house and they drink a little and she buys one of his paintings.

Even hints at author's name would be so welcome! I could be wrong, but I think the author was born in the West Indies, but is not herself Caribbean. Been looking here at "authors similar to" lists (Hemingway, Colette) & no luck. This is making me crazy & I know I have to write down any titles that have an impact on me.

Kate | 2 comments SOLVED: I kept circling around this, thinking it was an author "similar to" Jean Rhys. Turns out it *is* Jean Rhys and the title is "Good Morning, Midnight".
